Assuming we don't line the entire defense up 25 yards down the field, then we have a large advantage in the situation in question.
Then why wouldn't San Fran run it if we have such a large advantage if they pass? The only reason you say they are predictable is because a run isn't as good as a pass.
So shouldn't we not call the timeout so SF would be pressured to run the ball to burn our timeout?

I'm sorry, but if you want to go on arguing, you'll have to pay for another 5 minutes.

Wrong. Knowing somebody will seize a better option that you afford to them does not render an advantage over not giving them that option at all
You have yet to explain how calling that timeout gives them a better option. Not calling the timeout gives them more options. Why can't you understand this? It wasn't the 49ers timeout at stake here, it was the Saints'. If the 2 min warning wasn't a concern, the 49ers options were wide open. Do they go for the first through the air, or do they run the ball and force a timeout? It's anybody's guess. The simple fact that the clock was going to stop regardless, forcing a timeout is no longer an option. The overwhelmingly logical choice is to pass.

There's this really obscure term in our language for such a strategy. It's called "bait".

Because you can't pressure them into a sure-run situation. Best you can do there is probably 50% run / 50% pass, which is the absolute last thing you want as a defense.

I'm out until a more intelligent poster comes in. I've explained it to you sufficiently.

As a result of your highly intelligent remarks about Payton's use of timeouts, he has provided you the complementary PS3 remote. You may press select whenever you feel the timeouts are necessary.

I was thinking the same thing. Could it be?
Posted on 11/19/13 at 3:53 pm to TheSexecutioner
You keep talking about the mathematics of the decision but you have yet to acknowledge the playcalling strategy. The timeout took away the threat of the run, read option, and play action. The Saints (and most people watching the game) knew that second down was a pass. It worked out brillantly. Saints knew every move SF was making before they made them at that point in the game. I don't understand how you can say he was wrong when the plan worked like clockwork and you will never know if your theoretical strategy would have.

His strategy works every time in Madden. And he's probably one of the best in online tourneys too.
So there is that.
So there is that.

He showed he didn't even know the rules of the game, so I'm not going to just assume he has a good understanding of game theory.
You can clearly hear him tell the ref, "Yep, I want it anyway" in reference to the timeout on the review. He wanted extended time for whatever reason. I'll trust him over your conjecture every time.
To quote another Saints coach, "You THINK you know, but you DON'T know".
Your hubris is laughable.
