The books were incredibly bad/lazily written. Especially the 3rd. Author essentially hit the jackpot with a neat premise for the first one that hooked a shite load of teens into two more poorly written books.
I actually thought the first movie did a better job of developing some very one dimensional characters than the book did.

Battle Royale is on Netflix if you can manage a movie with subtitles or know Japanese. It's better.

But I did like how they expanded the use of the TV broadcast to explain some things, since the books are all told from Katniss's perspective.
