Phil Pressey left Mizzou his junior year and didn't get drafted but signed a 3 year deal as a free agent with the Celtics. I guess it worked out for him.

You guys are forgetting a big reason: many of them become academically ineligible which forces their hand.

At the worst those guys are going to make good money overseas. Might as well get paid when you can, regardless of the league you're in.

Hell one of my good friends growing up only played d2 basketball and while he was pretty good, he played in a smaller euro league and made bank. His living expenses were even paid for.

Eta. Obviously this mainly applies to basketball

As a general rule, kids shouldn't come out early just to make the league minimum.

League minimum in the NFL is about 400k. Practice squad is about 100k.

Which is much more than a college dropout who probably would not have been in college if it were not for his athletic ability can hope to make at 20-21.

Kids should declare for the draft as soon as they realize their draft stock won't get higher.

I agree.

They really don't have much leverage with the system set up against them.

Ok, so the kid comes out, makes the minimum for 4 years, and he's out of the game at 25-26 with nothing, because half that money was paid in taxes, and the typical player blows most of his salary. No money, no degree. solid plan.
