The story isn't important. Its more about the relationship between the two main characters.

This, which makes it a bad movie. It's fine as a character study or as a study in how to act off another character, but the movie was not good, no matter how spectacular the performances. A body without a skeleton is just a mess of skin and tissue lying on the floor. Without the skeleton, it cannot get up and walk around or dance. This movie had all the skin and tissue in the world, but nothing to hold it up. As such, it was a bad movie.

Add that to the facts that there are some really poor edits, imo, and the movie does not come to any sort of resolution worth a damn, and it stays flat throughout.

You're not alone in disliking this movie, Wiki. It came across as pretentious drivel despite the wonderful turns by Phoenix and Hoffman.

that whole post was fantastic, and couldnt agree more.

i think he got a little caught up in the sparse narrative concept of TWBB, and pushed it a little too far.

glad I'm not the only one.

another thing I'd like to say regarding Brosef Stalin's argument that "The story isn't important. Its more about the relationship between the two main characters."

even if that's true, I'd argue that the relationship between Quell and Dodd wasn't even that interesting, so the film failed on that level as well. and that's even if you consider any homosexual undertones, or any duality of man type scenarios where Quell and Dodd are symbols of man in 2 conflicting states.

it just wasn't that interesting.

I think this is intentional. It was PTA's way of putting you in Freddie's mind. By the end of the movie, Freddie and the audience are all wondering what the point of any of that was.

Really well stated man. You summed up my feelings of the movie better than I could ever hope to.
