sounds a lot better

You're forgetting about a couple of things:
1) the tone the player wants
2) the way the neck will play
3) the number of strings he wants on his neck without going custom shop

Will a strat be a more versatile guitar for someone who likes to play in lots of genres? Probably.
Will the wizard neck and tall frets lend the ibanez to tapping and shredding? Probably.

I have an older mid-upperish Ibanez RG series, and I get tons of interesting tones out of it. It's one of the most versatile guitars I own.

And then as far as quality, upper-end Ibanez is pretty well-made stuff.

1) This guitar should sound pretty good with a Mahogany body. The stock V77/87 IBZ pickups sound OK, but I have another IBZ RG7620 with similar, if not identical, pups. Not sure how much they've changed in 10 years. That's why I'm going to order some Bareknuckle Painkiller zebras with it.
2) Wizard neck. Badass
3) Number of strings = 7. That's just what I prefer playing.

I agree that Fenders are great guitars. I own a cheap one (my sig pic) which I swapped the bridge single coil pup with a hotrail so I could get a humbucker sound. I love it so much that I put a huge LSU Eye of the Tiger/Fleur de Lis sticker on it.

I just love IBZ necks and my RG7620 is versatile like yours. I get some great clean, vintage, and hard rock sounds out of it. I expect this S-series 7-string to be the same way...at least I hope so. I really would like to start recording again. With garageband for macs and iPads, there's really no excuse not to. It is so easy to get your ideas down. I just wish I had more time to do it.

Good luck in your quest, "hopeful doc."
