We always had two or three when I was growing up. Great cow dogs and could trail deer really good. They also barked plenty at night. Like most working dogs they need exercise or they will tear shite up.
But very loyal and protective of anyone living in your house.

I have a catahoula thats 2.5 now. Smart is an understatement. He's incredibly gentle with my boys 5&7 who use him like a wrestling dummy. When he's had enough he just gets up and moves away. He's a different dog when I'm not home. My wife says he flips a switch and goes into protection mode. He's bayed the UPS driver in his truck several times. When I come home he snaps back into puppy mode and is all play. There is no quit in this dog. When he sets his mind to do something it's gonna happen. He's a damn escape artist though. I should post pics of the dog pen. It started life as a 10x10 chain link pen, but has become a concrete and steel reinforced prison cell. He runs free when we get home from work and gets his exercise by chasing any and every little creature around my house including the kids on their power wheels. He's fairly destructive, but only if I'm not doing my part with exercise or food.
