Hm, then I don't get it.
So you think the groups are assigned by rank, but max torches are determined by guild level? I guess that could be right.

Participation is a big part of torch wars. What we do is try to be as close to the middle of the pack as possible most of the day. In the last 15 minutes we dispatch everyone against just a few guilds (based on number...leader will say everyone attack 20, 19, 18). We dispatch and leave a few of our best for defense...then just wait and defend as attackers come. So far we've done very well.

How do the boss battles work? I don't want to join in and frick it all up.

That's our strategy, too. Unfortunately, we had a few that didn't get the memo and put us on page 1 at 830 last weekend. Then next time we held off, but then only about 5 of us remembered to get on at 845 to haul.

You can't mess anything up. You just join and it's just your guys vs the boss. Once you die, jump back in and do it again. Each player just accumulates points individually.

Just hit challenge for the boss battle after I activate it at 9. Even if you can't do much damage you will get 1000 hb. Last night I fricked up and did 73M in the first 3 min so it was not a very long fight (not so subtle brag). Usually if you get on between 9 and 9:15 you can catch the fight.
In the fight, drop your tank on one side and the rest of you guys on the other side of the boss. Don't worry if they die. It does not require a revive. Rinse and repeat. Find the combination of heroes you have that lasts the longest/does the most damage.

Speaking of shards. I don't know why but I only just yesterday started doing dungeon 8 for shards. I have been missing out big time. I just was going on auto pilot and dumping my heroes out and not watching. With a little paying attention you can really clean up in the 8th dungeon.
