During the Auburn game, Beckham chose to high point the ball and catch facing the ball. In three of those instances the defender chose to watch him catch it and stick their in hand in front and knock the ball away.

Why doesn't he use the over the shoulder catch more? Seems like it would be more difficult to defend as he wold be using his body to shield the defender from the football. High pointing the ball is more effective if the receiver has a height and or size advantage.

serious answers/ comments are appreciated.

Over the shoulder is a harder catch I would imagine.

Harder to defend too. Some risk/reward when making the decision.

If you're near the sideline or back of the endzone, at some point you have to stop running and just go up for the ball.

I don't reacall any instance where Beckham should have tried to catch a ball over the shoulder and didn't.

You have to high point the ball with a defender on you in that situation. Imagine the situation you described. If he turns his back to catch it over his shoulder then what was to stop the DB from high pointing it and intercepting it.

Another thing to remember is that alot of time when we do goto the pass, we are in 2nd or 3rd and long. I can't recall off the top of my head what our down and distance was on that first throw to Beckham, but I seem to remember it being 3rd down (someone can correct me if I am wrong).

Anyway, in that situation the thought is to get a first down, so in this case I think Beckham wanted to turn and make the sure grab as opposed to try over the shoulder with a higher chance of dropping the ball, but a higher chance the defender doesn't catch him and its a TD. The priority is always moving the chains.

His misses in the first game and some last year were on these types of catches. It may be a problem with catching while keeping in stride. It looks like he is trading off the YAC for making sure he catches the ball, which is fine with me.

Edit: I did notice that he caught a pass or two early in the Kent State game in stride. He might be working on it in certain situations.

Beckham is an extremely talented WR. However one area he is lacking is his ball skills when going up for the catch. Sometimes he seems to misjudge the flight of the ball which puts him a little out of position to make the catch.

On the other hand Landry is a beast when going get the ball. I'm not sure there is a better WR with ball skills in the Country.

It could be as simple as his perception of where the ball will fall in that split second.. If he thinks its going to be short he will be fighting for the ball (defending against int & trying to catch). In that case you use hands forward.

If the ball is not going out in front of you ,you must break stride turn and go up for it. You judge like a fly ball in baseball ,catch it with glove up ,sideways or down.

Hi, F@G!

I've said that several times. He's such a playmaker - it is frustrating to see how he tries to play the long ball in the air most of the time.

LINK

quote:

i contended after TCU and still contend that OBJ has issues with playing the ball in the air. He just cannot do it well. That first pass of the game is a perfect example. He routinely turns around to the ball and tries to catch it facing the defender. All that does it make it much easier for the defender to break up the pass. It also makes it much harder for OBJ to fall and protect the ball in the process. OBJ needs to use his body (back) to defend the ball in flight from the DB.
