The New Orleans Saints, the only NFL team that has never won a postseason game, are having another one of those disappointing seasons.
After winning their first five games, the Saints have lost seven of nine, including three in a row. Their most recent loss was to the Giants on Monday Night Football, and Saints fans are so disgusted that when Saints quarterback Wade Wilson was left lying on the field with a knee injury in the fourth quarter, thousands of Superdome spectators actually cheered.
Sitting in our living room watching, we were stunned. This wasn't just a quick cheer, either. It was loud and it was long.
It was revolting.
"I've been coaching for 34 years," Saints coach Jim Mora said at his postgame press conference, "and tonight I saw and heard one of the most disgusting, rudest demonstrations in my entire career. The worst. I looked in the stands and saw people standing and cheering. And I'll say this: Those are some sick, sick, sick, sick people. Mentally sick. I thought it was horrible, disgusting, embarrassing, shameful. It stunk.
"People are sick when they do something like that. Absolutely sick. The guy is out there busting his butt, gets his knee blown up -- not badly, I hope -- and they're standing there, cheering and clapping. Those are sick people, sick in the head. They ought to get their butts thrown out of the stadium."
Later, on his postgame radio show, Mora said: "I wonder what their reaction would be if that was their son or brother or nephew. They ought to be taken out of the stadium and shot."
Maybe that last part is getting a little carried away, coach, but we get the point.
