He wants to compete the second he sets foot on campus. It's very unlikely he takes the job from AJ, but he will try at least. If he's the second best QB on the roster, I don't think he'll redshirt even as a backup.

he is an EE and said the main thing he liked was the chance to come in a compete to play right away

It won't be his choice whether he redshirts or not. He will get the opportunity to compete next spring though, no question about that.
