It reminds me of "Freaks And Geeks". And I'm sure you're saying WTF?
It's this. They knew they were getting cancelled, so they threw everything they had into the final 3 or so episodes. It probably could have ended with the spin the bottle episode which was about at the same place.
Breaking Bad. They get to go out on their terms. But still, they get to throw everything on the table. All the ideas they had to keep it going and going and then condense it into the final set of episodes. This may be the best one overall for the series, but maybe not. This next one may even be better and maybe even the finale.
But finales are hard to please the masses. The thing this show has going for it is that hardly anyone can ever foresee what is going to happen next. So it's hard to plan it out in your mind, the way you want it to end. Especially if they keep blowing our minds like this.

I thought they went into Season 5 with a planned ending? Canceled to me is like what happened to House. They went in planning for another season, but when shite hit the fan they rewrote the last 2-3 episodes to wrap it all up.
