Well, this is not a transcript. It's my attempt to paraphrase his detailed report on Tiger Zone last night for those who missed it.

We can all watch the games 400 times, but like you know, without the wide angle coaches tape, it's impossible to properly identify what's really happening.

For starters, Gordy said it is NOT our de's who are messing up. Opponents have seen a weakness on film and are exploiting our young guys (duh).

On the plays we lose contain, receivers are "cracking back" on our de's. So basically our de's get blindsided into a double team and the ball carrier gets the edge.

From there is is the responsibility of the olb to fill the vacated space around the DE to force the play back inside. Our olbs are misreading this play most of the time.

Also, sometimes they crack back on the de AND the olb. On those plays it's the safeties and corners who have to fill the vacated space.

We all see how soft Collins was at doing this. Gordy also said Martin and Thompson have filled in on these plays horribly.

So blame the linebackers and safeties and Collins. The de's are performing.

As an aside, he said kwon is the only linebacker that's been playing this right. Even barrow has been messing it up.

Good stuff. I felt the DL was aggressive before I read this. Good to know we just have soft LBs.

Devil's advocate here:

Is it possible for the DE's to get off the block(s) and still make a play? I dont believe any of them should get a free pass. Not the DE, LB, or DB's.

Why isn't Debo starting at a linebacker spot?

Pretty obvious who needs to start at LB.

Kwon: best LB on roster
Barrow: 2nd best on roster; has good size
T Jones: very fast and has tons of exp

L Louis should be first in, with D Jones as replacement for T Jones when he comes out. Beckwith should also play. All of the others should only play if there are injuries.

For the record, I'm not going to add any insight to this thread other than to say, WAY TO frickING GO!

These are the type threads I like to read when discussing LSU football. I'm not smart enough to really contribute X's and O'x analysis, but love to read this type stuff.

Way to go Big Ed! We need more threads like this.

Thanks for the summary. I would almost have preferred that the onus lay on the DE's. The explanation furnished by Gordy implicates lax play in several layers of our defense. It's not particularly encouraging when the LB's, CB's, and safeties are all making repeated errors. It indicates that we will be exceedingly vulnerable against good teams who put pressure on those very positions. For example, Gurley will rampage if we don't fill properly, take appropriate angles, and tackle.

I also had a chance to review the tape, not game film, but DVR, and I can agree with him on most counts there.

However, there is no way I can give Rasco a full pass. He has repeatedly lost contain, getting sucked inside of his own volition. Don't get me wrong, he has made plays, too. But, I have more confidence in Allen right now, in so far as containment goes.

I went into this season feeling really good that Rasco would hold down one spot. I feel that way about Allen now, and I'm looking for one of the younger guys to eventually grab the other spot, with Rasco and the rest sharing time.

Mills had his worst game in an LSU uniform Sat. night. I think Martin missed every tackle he attempted, even on the rare occasion he took the right angle. And he also showed no closing speed on over the top coverage. His spot is barely more secure than Collins', IMO.

Containment is a major issue right now for this LSU team. The best looking LB'er so far, Kwon Alexander, has actually looked good playing more like an inside guy. He's reading the run well and reacting without hesitation, never allowing containment to become an issue.

Right now, this team will get gashed by offenses like Auburn, Ole Miss, and A&M. That's why I'm so excited about the Kent St. game, and the opportunity to see guys play their way into the lineup. Unfortunately, Kent St. isn't the perfect team to iron all of our defensive issues out, and we'll see some of that occur the following Saturday.

And the good news is that these problems are very coachable/correctable. It is not a lack of ability, but execution on the defensive side. Just having some of the starters sit more and watch it in real time may help during the Kent game.

Welter has been getting beat up by the fans, but I've seen every linebacker fail to wrap up what should have been a clean tackle, except Barrow and Kwon. And ALL the DBs who have played have whiffed on tackles.

Good news - the young linemen are ahead of schedule. Again- the rest of this is very coachable/fixable. I would be much more worried about the SEC schedule if the linemen were getting mauled and the LBers were covering for them.

Our DE's have been bad at contain for years. I've literally felt like calling the coaches show and asking Les if they teach stuff like "deep as the deepest man". Basic stuff that DE's learn in YMCA ball in fifth grade.

It seems like 75% of the time, all the QB has to do is look like he is handing off the other way and our DE's are already going that way behind the defensive line and completely forgetting all their fundamentals.

Yes. LBers are in wrong position. DB's are really struggling to take right angles and cover.

I don't think the DEs are faultless. They get collapsed inside a ton and not because of "crack backs." They are just getting beat by OTs and TEs.

But yeah, the LBs have been miserable. Kwon started to show something 2nd half vs. UAB, but he's struggled at times too.

Mismatch. Shed them and make a play.

Trying to breakdown film without having knowledge of the calls made on the sideline is about as useful as tits on a nun.
