I knew it would come off as a jab when it wasn't meant to be. It's a term I prefer to use when someone is upset over something gender-based. It's not meant to say anything about you as a person.
I just personally think there are things not worth being upset over.. and who the check is handed to is one. We are all humans.. nobody is reading anyone's mind. Cutting someone's tip who otherwise gave you great service because they handed the bill to the wrong person kinda erases everything good they did and seems really cut-throat.
Generally, the man pays. Probably 95% of people I wait on.. the man pays. Generalizations exist because of what generally happens.
Without laying the check on the middle of the table in "neutral zone", how else would they go about making it equal for a couple at an upscale place? Should they ask who is paying? (which would be weird). Should they automatically hand it to the woman? (but then wouldn't that still be an assumption with no backing?)

The obvious solution is that every restaurant should establish a demilitarized zone in the EXACT center of every table identified by red tape. There should be a formal ceremony where the waitstaff places the check in the DMZ without looking at any party member which could insinuate who they think is paying.... /sarcasm
That or people who eat at restaurants could just quit getting their knickers in a bunch over where the check is placed, who gets the wine menu, or any other assortment of made up slights.
