Thanks so much for posting. Though I was born in 1961 obviously after the great LSU-Ole Miss game with Billy Cannon's runback, my Mom and Dad always told me that Coach Dietzel was a special Tiger and I did get to meet him at a basketball game when I was a student at LSU and he was the AD. Thanks so much for the update .

Had the opportunity to talk to him a few times over the years and was a interesting guy to talk to...always very approachable and positive.
My thoughts and prayers are for him to be comfortable in the time he had left.
Prayers to his family as well.

Songy talked of this last week.

He's had a great life and prayers to that family!

Dietzel left LSU after the 1961 season to take the head coaching job at West Point, and left behind some hard feelings after saying he would never coach anywhere but LSU.

From the linked article.

eta: I do wish him a speedy recovery.

Wow. What memories because of him. I was 11 years old and my father had 2 tickets and with other friends were going to that Ole Miss game in 1959. My oldest brother, who was 14, was the choice to get the second ticket. Well it was Halloween and my brother was asked to go to a Sadie Hawkins dance by the daughter of family friends and my mother put her foot down, said he had to go with the girl instead of the game. So I came of the bench, so to speak, and went with my father. We were sitting on the west side about the 48 yard line. All I remember about the punt return was I couldn't see because I was so short!! I leaned out by the isle and saw Billy Cannon streak by for a millisecond.

Thank You Paul Diesel for bringing that moment to us all.
