Is my chicken still good (food/fridge question)

Last night I grilled up some pretty good chicken breast. Well I pulled the last batch off at around 8:45. I had already eaten so I went take a shower and went to bed. There were some people who hadn't eaten by the time I took the last ones off, and they were too hot to stick in the fridge. Well, the ones that didn't eat yet did not bother to put the left over chicken in the fridge after they were done. I woke up at 5:15 to go to work and the chicken was still sitting on the counter. I threw in in the fridge, but not sure if I should just throw it away or not.
It sat out on the counter for a couple hours, cooling to room temperture. Was it out too long without going in the fridge to eat today?
I know chicken is kind of weird (the site owner and the food). Don't want to eat it and get sick (the food, not the site owner).

Do it. Update with results

I think you can leave it out as long as 4 hours.

I know this girl that orders pizza and lets it sit out overnight on purpose before she wants it. Shes still alive and who knows what is growing on pizza pepperoni sausage whatever.

Do you have an old fashioned "ice box"? If not, put that shite in the fridge, even if it's hot.

yeah, I didn't get that "it was too hot to put in the fridge"
OP, it's probably starting to grow some bacteria but you can probably eat it and only will get some gas.

Put it in the fridge after 8 hours, probably has contaminated all the food in the fridge now.

Not worth the risk. Toss it.

As others have said, this relates to old refrigerators and their inefficiencies in cooling. The chicken will be fine. Most people keep their homes cool enough that it will be ok. There will be some bacteria, but it shouldn't hurt you. I saw a guy eat a shrimp poboy that had mayo on it that sat out more than 24 hrs, he was fine and you should be too.
Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor (only a scientist) and this isn't medical advice.

The "danger zone" for food is between 40-140 degrees...basically that is when the bacteria for food born illness will grow...time is also a factor...it takes 4 hrs of food being in the danger zone before bacteria will grow.
Bottom line, it's been too long and that chicken is risky. Plus, chicken is one of the most dangerous of foods.
Throw that shite away...

That logic has been handed down from the time when they used Ice Boxes and hot food made the ice melt faster. They have no idea why you can't put hot food in the fridge, it's just what they've always been told.

i have always heard that the most dangerous foods are wet starches like pasta and potatoes. assuming we're talking about cooked food.
eta: i would eat it but put a max keep time of like 2-3 days instead of the standard week. if it's chicken he cooked it the whole way through, and who wants to throw out good food you spent time cooking?

Salmonella is one of the most damaging of all food born illnesses...comes from chicken.
Proteins are the most dangerous foods although there can be some bad stuff on leafy vegetables...
Pasta is made from flour/wheat and potatoes are not high risk.
