re: Best tactical fighter aircraft?

I'm not one of those experts like Drew Orleans was talking about but in a thread titled best tactical fighter an "attack" plane like the A-10 doesn't really belong.

That's not a knock on the A-10. It's a very impressive attack plane.

F-16 in a pure dog fight wins most of the time against the field.

Without a doubt, the A-10 was not designed as a fighter. But, in a ground support role, there is none better. I thought the same thing when the pics of bombers started showing up. All great aircraft, just the wrong thread.

I can't argue with the F-16. It's w/t ratio and turn radius is incredible.

I have dummy rounds from an A-10's 30mm cannon and done from an F-4's 20mm cannon.

The difference in 10mm is a whole lot.

The first time I saw a 30mm round at an airshow I was in awe. I had been around 20's before but this took on a whole new meaning of firepower from a muzzle.

While at Ft. Leonard Wood you'd occasionally see A-10s doing gun range on the areial ranges. You cannot help but be impressed by the sound that cannon makes.

We talking ACM or BFM?

I think the eagle is the superior airframe either way...

In BFM F-16's will routinely out perform F-15's.

I understand they're not as fast and can't climb like an eagle. But they're more nimble and just not as visible.

It's amazing this debate had been going on for over 30 years

I don't care what you're flying. If you ever find yourself in a dog fight with either an f-16 of f-15 chances are, you're going to have a really bad day.

It would be badass to see a Tomcat and a Eagle go head to head. No BVR bull shite. Just a straight up dog fight. I'm thinking the Tomcat comes out on top.

Tomcat and Eagle are both phenomenol but different role. Tomcat designed to standoff and engage targets at long distance and can engage up to 6 at a time that is what the RIO is for. Tomcat designed to protect carrier and keep enemy fighters and bombers from even getting close to carrier.

Eagle is an air superiority fighter designed to go any place and anywhere and dominate the sky and outfight anything it dogfights.

If the Tomcat doesnt get the Eagle at a long distance the Eagle wins the dogfight fairly easily.

That was told to me by a Navy fighter pilot at Mirarmar at an air show in the early 90s

I just think in the hands of a skilled pilot the tomcat prevails. It's more maneuverable then the Eagle. It's rate of climb is comparable and is just a little slower.
