I currently work in government started at 42k moved up to roughly 45k after 1 year... Governmental may not be something that you want to get into if but if you need some experience go for it.. but I am definitely looking to moving into a firm I hate working for the government.

I've worked in all three places...graduated last may. Held a job in government while attending school, intern with offer from big four and huge oil and gas.
Gov= 45-50k starting
Big four ~ 53-55k
Oil and gas ~ 68-70k

They all have their pros and cons.
Government you won't work very hard. You won't have a high ceiling but you will undoubtedly get in at 8 and leave at 4:30 everyday, NO MATTER WHAT! Huge plus but I can't stay in government. Ceiling isn't very high and the people you work with aren't the best.
Big four: busy season is busy season, know that. People are a lot more a like and a lot of fun. Great place to be young and working.
Oil and gas: pay a lot more, work with a lot sharper people, work with older people some what, but a lot more competitive.

I'll be making $24 an hour as an intern for a Big 4 plus OT.
Was told to expect Mid-fifties coming out of school as base salary, and get a little bonus for having completed CPA exam. I'm in tax but I don't think Audit would vary much at all. Working in a large market in the South.
