I'd like to see the amount of fish that died shortly after being fought for hours. I'd be surprised if it wasn't a good amount of them.

I understand people wanting to tag and release, but if I caught a monster like that, it'd be hard for me to release it.

More than likely after a 13 hour fight the fish was DOA when it got to the boat so had to keep it. Ate Marlin in Hawaii years ago, some of the best fish I have ever eaten, it won't go to waste.

I guess you're right about the fighting til death part of it, and in that case you have an easy decision. This goes both ways and I honestly wouldn't judge anyone who keeps one regardless.

anybody that says they are gonna fight a fish 3+ hours and cut it loose is a damn liar or fool.. simple as that

Supposedly a 13 hour fight to which there is argument the fish was as good as dead upon being landed. On the other hand, that's an excessively long time to fight the fish. Bigger get landed routinely in less than half or even a quarter of that time. Makes me think that they were using too light of tackle or that the Captain could have done more... Or it could simply be that the story has been embellished a bit. Either way, a hell of a fish and the woulda, coulda and shouldas don't mean much now..

It was about a 650 lber if memory serves me correct. It was very good eating, didn't eat it as sushi, ate it cooked, very good. As someone else stated, much like swordfish. At least it has some table fare value compared to say a Tarpon.

13 hours has to be a typo. That's a long fricking time to fight a fish.

Definitely agree, no reason to keep a tarpon unless you have a horde of hungry cats.

crummy captain/angler if that took 13 hours, unless they hooked it on a 30 stand-up gear.

Congratulations to the crew of the Whoo Dat with a 712 lb Blue Marlin !

As for the 13 hr fight; fish are like people, some in better shape than others. 13 hrs s very possible, but the fish was probably dead and they may have had to plane it up from deep water a few feet at a time. If this was the case, they are damn lucky to have landed it and not broken the line or straightened a hook.

I know these guys and they play by the rules and have always been honorable fishermen--- hats off to yah guys! Nice fish.

re: Possible new Blue Marlin record caught at Tarpon rodeo

I don't see how there's anyway that should've taken 13 hours to fight.

Hell my boss's buddy caught a 650# marlin in Costa Rica last summer and it only took I wanna say 5 hours to land.

Either way its a hell of a fish.
