Making clarinet as a freshman is a major accomplishment. Not impossible though.

no. In fact, the majority (70+% by my estimation) are not music majors.

Yep. The music majors are the snobby ones in TB. I was an ISDS major, actually.

thanks, I guess that is kind of a dumb question

Not really. Being a music major is a requirement for some schools' marching bands.

And that's why you can't hear them. Don't know how to let loose and get that HBCU sound when they need it. That's why I love the GBFTL; we/they can play so many styles.

Clarinet section is tough to make. Tell him to switch to Tuba, my first year in band two of the other tuba players had never even touched one before band camp. They were desperate

edit: I had only played it for a year and learned to play tuba specifically to make it in to the GBFTL

Hoping for some insight for those of you have been through this.

My son is an incoming freshman, he will be attending band camp with hopes of making it.

Band all four years in HS including marching band. Plays Clarinet. Was first chair and made several honor bands. How many of the 320 might be clarinets, how many clarinets usually go out or get cut?

Appreciate any insight,thanks
Hey, here's a novel idea. How about contacting the Band Director for accurate information regarding this. rking3@lsu.edu.

Former clarinet here.

2004 was my freshmen year. 50-60 tried out and 32 made it. 80% of those cut were freshmen.

Each year after that fewer people tried out. I don't know the health of the band since Wickes and Moorehouse left.

This year is the perfect year for him to try out in clarinet though. The saxophones are barely returning anyone and if I heard right, it's the same with the clarinets.

Tried that, not much forthcoming. His HS director is former GDFTL so he had some info.

Thanks to everyone for their insight and advise. We will hope for the best. If not he is also doing ROTC and there is plenty to keep him busy there.

Good luck to your son. I played clarinet & tenor sax in high school but didn't even think about trying out for the band. Too interested in partying at the games with my buds (and the future Mrs. Rabbit ).

Thanks and understood. In HS all his buds were the other band and jrotc members.
