Hoping for some insight for those of you have been through this.

My son is an incoming freshman, he will be attending band camp with hopes of making it.

Band all four years in HS including marching band. Plays Clarinet. Was first chair and made several honor bands. How many of the 320 might be clarinets, how many clarinets usually go out or get cut?

Appreciate any insight,thanks

Clarinet is prob one of the three toughest to make along with drums and piccolo. Memorize all the LSU music. Most cuts come from woodwinds.

I've only known 2 band people in my life and from what I've gathered it makes Lousiana politics look like child's play. That's all I got.

Clarinet is a hard section to make. Be sure he knows the music really well and is a good marcher. You have probably noticed that Tiger Band is heavy on the brass instruments. Woodwind spots are hard to make in comparison to brass.

Clarinet section damned hard to make. Hell, getting into GBFTL is hard now. If you had been a responsible parent you would have asked this question when he was a freshman in high school. I would have told you then to get him on French Horn and Mellophone for marching band. Much better chances.

Woodwinds are difficult to hear on the field and in the stands. It's definitely not the easist instrument to make it in the band. Just the facts. Make sure in addition to playing everything technically correct he understands marching is a BIG key to making TB.

Honestly, Clarinet is one of the instruments that gets a lot of cuts. The most important thing is his marching coordination. If he's a music major, they tend to give them priority, but not always if they're horrible marchers. Main thing they look at is marching ability since you can't really hear the clarinets in marching bands anyway. (not being a dick, just how it is)

Not many. They make the deepest cuts to saxophones, piccolos, and clarinets. Piccolos and clarinets get hit the hardest.

Tell him good luck.

no. In fact, the majority (70+% by my estimation) are not music majors.
