i once ran over a nest that was under ground with a riding mower the nest was so big it stopped the mower dead. i didnt know what i had hit so i got off the mower and went to lift it off of the mound. thats when i heard buzzing and instinctively ran like hell. fortunately for me i didnt get stung but when i did stop running to look back the entire mower was fully engulfed by yellow jackets in a ball that must have been 10-15 feet across there must have been tens of thousands that came out and it took  hours till the sun went down for them to settle enough for me to sneak up with a tow cable to pull the mower off the mound which threw them once again into a frenzy. i was scared shitless they were gonna find a way into that truck but they didnt. lucky me.
