Er...did you watch the episode? It was 2 MINUTES from hitting them. 2 MINUTES. It wasn't guided so they could have gone off in any direction and it would have missed.

They did send out a distress call which summoned the Enterprise.

They didn't care if we knew - in fact, they were trying to send a message. They just wanted there to be some uncertainty - they wanted to review the effectiveness of the weapon before they launched a mass sortie.

I was arguing his point that the Romulans were trying to be sneaky and not start a war.

The Romulans are sneaky by nature, though. They wanted their intentions to be secret until the last possible minute. They did not want to trigger a Federation response to the attacks on the outposts. The ship was supposed to return to Romulan space and report on the effectiveness of the weapon. This actually backfired on them, because losing the ship means the Romulan leadership learned nothing from the mission, because of the extreme measures taken to keep the mission secret.

They were at maximum warp. They probably couldn' turn without slowing. Due to time shifting effect of warp speed they wouldn't have had two minutes anymore. Any slowing would have instantly impacted them in full strenght of the blast.

*WHAT ARE LITTLE GIRLS MADE OF*

We have our first episode to, sort of, feature Nurse Chapel.

More or less a straight adventure story, but there are some questions raised about the ethical use of technology - "playing G-d", and the like. Another episode on what it means to be human. I find the vibe of the episode predictive of my favorite film, Bladerunner, although it obviously deviates in many ways.

Shatner apparently made maximum use of his shot to kiss Sherry Jackson (Andrea). Her lips look a little swollen after the smooch and much of the lipstick is transferred.

Ted Cassidy is wonderful as Ruc.

Maybe.

Maybe they just made something club shaped and clubs just look vaguely phallic, anyway.

Perhaps mine, as well. In any event, the lovely Sherry Jackson is, in all likelihood, NOT a product of Big Gene's Casting Couch (tm) - a former child star, she worked a $hit ton before and after Star Trek - although she never quite reached true stardom.

but most clubs aren't a fleshy pink color with a vaguely ball-shaped knob on the end opposite a rounded end

The lighting does that - the wall behind Kirk is the same color.

You got me there. I didn't say it doesn't look like what you filthy minded people think it looks like.

Prop guys are no different than anyone else. How many Disney animators over the years stuck clearly phalic symbols in the animation.

It happens.

While a great episode, the script of "Balance Of Terror" is a total ripoff of The Enemy Below

According to Harlan Ellison, the writer of "BOT" even admitted, proudly, that he had plagiarized TEB

That is weird. I saw your post but the pic didn't pop up. Didn't even show a missing pic. Remembered the days of you always posting pics of old movies so I went to grab a pic posted it and it was the one you had posted which some odd reason didn't show up the first time I read the post.

Good episode. Jackson is gorgeous. One of Star Trek's most beautiful actresses.

I liked the creation process. Very interesting visually. It would have been very easy to have android Kirk simply appear out of a booth.

Ruk is a great baddie, with that voice and the way he throws Kirk around like a doll.

Spock plays it very cool after the "message" from Kirk.

Great line at the end. "Dr Corby was never there."

I think so - perhaps the best all around hottie of all of TOS, although Yvonne Craig (Batgirl) is certainly my personal favorite, and Lee Meriwether (Catwoman, well, one of them, anyway) was a former Miss America.

In any event, Sherry Jackson's Andrea was legit .

I like the anecdote about Cassidy in the Ruk costume. They parked him at Roddenberry's desk with a big cigar and had him pretend to be Gene when a clothes salesman came calling. Dude could barely speak at first, but ultimately composed himself and made his pitch.

Gene bought some pants from the guy. The point of the exercise was to see how scary Ted looked to regular people as Ruk.
