How many TVs in the typical house?

I was talking to a directtv salesperson about switching from cable the other day. They asked how many TVs are in my house after I told them we have 3 kids. When I said 1 she looked at me like I was from another planet. She then tried to offer me a multiple tv deal anyway and said I should go ahead and buy another tv. It was odd. I just don't really want a tv in my bedroom, and I really don't want one in kids bedrooms. Is it that abnormal?

I'd say it's not particularly normal, wouldn't say abnormal. When I was growing up my sister and I each had TVs in our own rooms after a certain age, also had 3 other TVs in the house in the kitchen, den, and small guest bedroom my parents did most of their tv watching in.
Right now my roommate and I have 3 TVs between the two of us, one in the living room area and one in each of our rooms.
I'd say you're definitely in the minority outside of single occupant apartments or houses most likely.
Are your kids really young or something? Not sure how you could get away with that without having massive bitching. Would seem to be a pain in the butt if you are wanting to watch some sports or a movie and the kids or wife are wanting to watch something else.

We have 3 (media room, living room, and bar/breakfast room). The one in the living room never gets turned on.
I refuse to have a TV in the bedroom.

I have three kids as well and there is only one tv in my house. Just one big screen in the living room. The only other place i would consider having one is in my bedroom. I don't want tvs in the kids rooms.

Not abnormal. We don't have any in the bedrooms, but damn near every other room in the house has a tv.
I would say the avg household has 3 tvs.

FWIW, I think TVs are a great source of education.
And I'm dead serious. You can learn more in 5 minutes watching TV (any station) than you could learn in an hour in the classroom.

4 TVs usually, 1 in the living room...and 3 others in the 3 other bed rooms

Why is it you don't want your kids to have TVs in their rooms?
Do you feel like you are too lame to get their attention if you had to compete with TVs in their rooms?
What happens if everyone wants to watch different programming, who wins? That sounds like a recipe for disaster? Your kids can still read and pursue academics with a TV in their own rooms. Plus with the abductions and kidnappings I don't want my son outside without me. He's barely 3 now so as he gets older he will have a TV in his room.

We used to have 6 TVs, all hooked to cable (most to HD). There were times when everyone was watching something on a separate TV. Ditched cable (replaced with Roku/Hulu etc.) and now we rarely watch TV...when we do, it is usually as a family (teen-agers). One of the best decisions we ever made.
