I've heard about this show for a good while. Started watching the other night and it's very meh so far. Only watched 2 episodes. Is that pretty much all I'm going to get from it or does it get better? I don't want to waste my time watching 12 episodes if this is any indication

Very character driven. You've got to let the storylines playout.

Yes. First season really spends some time introducing you to the characters. Watch the first season. If you aren't interested, then you won't like the show.

Yeah stick with it. I had to be forced to finish the first season. One of my favorite shows now.

The episodes really benefit from rewatches.

Mad Men Fans are much more civil than Breaking Bad fans. The BB response to this thread would be:

You must just be a simpleton with no taste. How could you not like the greatest show ever shown on television? Don Draper is the greatest character ever invented. We are all lucky to have been graced with its presence.

It didn't take me awhile "to get into it". But folks around here like to bash MadMen for it's slow pace.

About as long as it takes Don to get his dick wet in some strange.

Me too. Of course, I've faced the usual shaming tactics of "it's character driven" with implications that I do not have the intelligence to understand that and get into the show. I just could not do it. My job is stressful and "character driven" enough.

This was my problem with it initially, but I realize now how stupid that is. It is character-driven, once I got to know the characters it became more interesting. I flew through the first 5 seasons on Netflix, but I really didn't appreciate it until this season. I think a big reason why is I'm not watching 2-3 at a time, rather I'm watching one several times and picking up on things that I didn't notice during the initial viewing.

It doesn't matter if it's character driven if the characters are boring

I haven't made up my mind yet. I'm going to give it a few more episodes. I need something new to watch with the wife.

Its a show for thinking people that like to analyse and ponder the symbolism and parallels to modern life etc. Its very literary.

It is not plot driven, and the action is generally non-compelling.

Not for everybody.

I'm trying my best not to spoil anything for you. Just keep watching. If you still think that after the first season you probably won't like it.

I only watch like 2-3 shows, so I do

yeah, that's my plan. what usually happnes is that i'll give a show a full season before making up my mind, and by then i feel i've invested the time so i have to finish anyway

The major strike Mad Men has against it compared to others in the "top tier" is that there is very little to no violence in the show. A viewer can become bored because of the sense that not much is "happening". It's a character story, not a plot driven show. Tons of metaphors in this show as well. By the end of the first season, Draper should be compelling enough for you to at least follow him. Seemingly the principal cast -Peggy,Pete,Roger,Betty and Joan develop down the line. To me, Peggy and Pete scenes are as interesting as they get, while Roger provides some lighthearted awareness. Betty is either loved or despised. Joan is/was more of slow burning character.

Other character develop as well, but Draper duality is and will be the main narrative. If you don't enjoy it by the end of season 1 get out of the show.

ETA: by the season 2 premiere, it follows up a few things. One of the best scenes in the show happened then.
