If you were worried about PlayStation 4 games costing more than PlayStation 3 games, think again. Sony has confirmed to ShackNews that PS4 titles purchased at retail will cost $59.99.

quote:

This news comes on the heels of Microsoft’s confirmation that Xbox One games at retail will also cost the now-standard $59.99. Late generation concern about next-gen pricing mostly arose because of the $10 jump in pricing from the PS2 era to the PS3 era, which also transcended the jump from Xbox to Xbox 360.

so much for that speculation, Sony or MS charging more than 60 would be shooting themselves in the foot.

How do Sony and Microsoft actually control game prices?

I don't know, but the $50-$60 pricepoint for mainstream titles has basically been the standard for the past 20 years, with a few ups and downs. I mean, weren't a few SNES games $60? N64 as well. Blame Nintendo!

They set a MSRP for all standard titles on their hardware. There is no binding agreement to that, but most publishers stick with that unless there's a special or limited edition with extra content.

However, there may be a caveat here, as the specific quote reads, “All four [launch/launch window] titles, Killzone: Shadow Fall, DriveClub, Knack, and Infamous: Second Son are all $59.99.”

Conveniently left that part of the article out, eh?

I'm actually pretty surprised by this. The fact that video games on these consoles has pretty much stayed the same for about 20 years is remarkable.

The methods of programming and mass producing them have became easier to fight off inflation

Development costs have been skyrocketing. While you have smaller developers propping up and those experiences are generally much cheaper to develop (and to buy!), those are also a product of the stupid high budgets.
