My 2 centavos on the XB1 and the PS4

Both will be excellent at their respective focus.
With the XB1, MS needed to explain that they are merely adopting a PC distribution model for content, and that the 24 hour "check-in" is just an account validation tool a la Steam, Origin, Blizzard, etc. By allowing content providers to control more tightly the distribution channel, both piracy and secondhand sale profit losses are mitigated, allowing for new games to retail cheaper off the bat. I would expect that games from publishers will retail on a sliding scale, comparable to PC, and the title prices will scale almost real-time to the demand for the game. Micro-adjustment and flash sales allow for revenue streams to be more constant to the developers.
Additionally, the computational offloading allowed by the Azure platform will drastically increase the realism and interactivity in several games. Imagine a Skyrim with a completely destructible game world and no loading times anywhere. No pop ins. Server side patches and content additions. A Madden or NCAA game in which the crowds and sideline AI are handled offsite, allowing for better instantaneous AI from the players on the field.
MS is just moving in the direction that Sony eventually will, and that's not a bad thing. If your console sits in your living room and you have a dedicated internet connection, there shouldn't be a problem.
For me personally, I'm liking the Kinect 2 potential and the media passthrough. I'll use alot.
If you're a gamer on the go, then the PS4 makes sense. It's a freer platform to operate with. That will serve some people better than the XB1. Eventually though, once people get over the stigma of the content license vs ownership and the daily check in, MS could have an advantage in the services that come along with those requirements.

Solid post
I think both systems are going to be awesome and that the competition between the two will only improve things for us gamers

You didn't mention the Wii U therefore the post is invalidated.

Its crazy how lost Nintendo is in this whole thing. They have completely fricked up the Wii U launch. There are hardly any games for it right now and 3rd parties are abandoning ship. Its kind of sad. I hope Nintendo can turn it around.

They should go ahead and just refocus themselves as developers and just sell Mario/Zelda/etc. off as multi-platform games ... they make more money this way anyways.

IF Nintendo goes down, then these games more thank likely go down with the ship.
No way IMO that they ever give them up.

Agreed. Nintendo needs 3rd party support desperately. Watch Dogs is coming to Wii U which is good, but they need other big titles to come or they could be fricked.

Where as I understand this ... if PS & MS force them out of the race and offer money to them to continue making their games but for the PS & MS consoles instead this would be a WIN/WIN for everyone.
Nintendo needs to stick with handhelds and leave the big boy gaming to the big boys ...

What I mean is Nintendo needs to get out of hardware and just be a 3rd party publisher.

not true at all, steam/origin games are still widely pirated.

The only problem with this is XB1 games are going to be $60 while I've gotten full retail games on steam for less than $5. PC had to adopt a restrictive distribution model because piracy is a very real concern that doesn't exist in the console market. Microsoft is going to give us PC restrictions at console prices, and no explanation I've seen makes any sense beyond that they want more money.

Eliminating the used game market....
