Gene Wilder made a rare public appearance in New York on Thursday night, and didn't pull any punches when it came to Tim Burton's 2005 remake of "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" with Johnny Depp in the role Wilder made famous.
"I think it's an insult," Wilder, 80, said of Burton's film, which was called "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." "It's probably Warner Bros.' insult." Warner Bros. released "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and the film made $474 million around the world.
"It's all about money," Wilder said about the remake in a 2005 interview with The Guardian. "It's just some people sitting around thinking: 'How can we make some more money?' Why else would you remake 'Willy Wonka'? I don't see the point of going back and doing it all over again."
As Wilder said on Thursday during the event at New York's 92Y, he also had a problem with Burton's choices as director. »

Funny thing is I think Roald Dahl hated the original movie and Wilder's interpretation of Wonka.

it wasn't really a remake because it was much more faithful to the book

so an old arse actor has a problem with a "remake" that was much more like the original source material than his version?
lulz.
go frick yourself, gene.

While the original is by far the better film, I liked but takes. I loved the book too.

talk about grumpy old man.
It's not like he made the greatest movie ever.

And I totally agree with him. The original wasn't faithful to the book because the book would translate poorly to a movie--and it obviously did. The Depp one was an abortion. The original was and is fantastic.

Gene may be a grumpy old man but he is right. Gayer Michael Jackson Wonka was horrible.

Would have been awesome to see Richard Pryor in Blazin saddles with Gene. But they were scared to cast him back then because of his rauchiness.

I'm torn on this...
While on one hand Pryor/Wilder would have epic together in Blazing Saddles...
Cleavon Little was truly perfect for the part. It took more time for me to truly appreciate his work in that movie. But it truly was "If Sidney Poitier(sp) was in a comedy about the racist wild west"
He played the role "straight". Pryor might have went for more obvious laughs and would have been incredible..
But Little/Wilder were truly great as well.

Pryor wrote the screenplay and knew what he wanted. His comic genius is obvious, but Little was great in filling in for him. With Richard Pryor it would have been even funnier, he had greater chemistry with Wilder has evident by their later movies. He played straight comedy brilliant in See No Evil/Hear No Evil and others, but the world wasn't quite ready for Richard yet.

it was pretty stupid, but why is he saying this 8 years later?
Posted on 6/14/13 at 5:30 pm to RonFNSwanson
because Richard Osborne asked him about it on his show.
