How does not wanting my wife to have to work make me insecure?

You're still raising your kids. 2 kids at home means you pay less for daycare during the day. 3 at school means you pay a babysitter from 3-5. 20$ a day = nothing.
I don't want my kids in daycare. Plus, you forgot to factor in the cost of the daycare itself. Why is that so hard to understand?

Your wife just needs to send out her resume for an administrative type position for a part time fixed ours type schedule.

She will if she has to but I just want to avoid that if at all possible.

Thanks again guys.

If you're serious, trust me, you never want to know what it feels like. I was making 6 figures at 26 and then things just fell apart.

If you're just trying to brag about how much money you make then you can go frick yourself.

I apologize in advance if you weren't being a dick.

Sorry for your situation. Best of luck.

I was simply saying daycare costs + babysitter costs don't really matter when she has a job making 30k+. She will cover that and easily get above 800$ a month.

Now I think a part time administrative job is awesome IF she can find one (big if IMO).

Good luck sir.

Also what do you do?
Have you looked for other jobs?

Thanks. I'm in industrial/commercial sales and have been for 12 years. I hate it. I wanted to teach and coach (which is why I have a useless degree) but it was too late to switch majors when I found out how little teachers make in LA. I don't blame anyone else for my situation but my mother was killed in a car accident when I was 5 and I was raised by my Grandmother who had a 3rd grade education. I was the first to go to college in my family and I just didn't have anyone to tell me to get a degree that actually paid more than what it costs to live.

Probably the first thing your wife can do is to become a financial expert for your family.

By looking at every dollar you spend, she can negotiate credit card rates, eliminate recurring monthly charges you don't need, and reduce the rest. It's also time for her to shop around for insurance, electricity, cell phone plans, and everything else.

Then she can get your family on a tight budget and figure out how to be as efficient as possible with food costs. That means not going out to eat, planning her grocery costs and meals, and packing quick snacks where she would usually drive through.

That should save at least $1000 per month, without the hassle of picking up a part-time job.

Best of luck to you. I don't envy the stress you are going through and hope it works out well in the long haul.

No credit cards and we just refinanced the mortgage on the house that I built myself over the course of a year. Could probably drop cable though.

We eat out about once every 6 months, shop at walmart once a week.

We keep a spreadsheet of every dollar that comes in and goes out. There just isn't much left to squeeze with 3 kids in private school (we live on the edge of the parish and our kids would have to go to a really shitty public school).

Well, congrats that you already have so much financial discipline.

Assuming you don't want to sell your cars and buy "beaters" (eliminating car notes), private school for 3 kids seems to be your big expense.

So it's school versus cars, or you could ask your wife if she has ever considered offerring massages on Craigslist.

Bad news, '00 minivan and 01 truck both paid for.

Guess it's either massages or carrying Chad's kid.

Well, that sucks then. Private school seems important to you, so I hope you find a way to increase your or your wife's income.

The last resorts would be downsizing or finding a cheaper private school, but downsizing can be expensive too with moving costs and commissions.

My kids are in private school and I know that would be a very hard cut to make - hopefully it never comes to that.
