A GoT question: the books and the tv series related

I watch the show but have never read the books. I have two questions.
1) how does the show follow the series? Does one season equal one book? This is what I assume but I want to be sure.
2) should I read the series while I wait for the new season? I really enjoy the tv experience and I don't really want to ruin that, but I am so curious as to what happens next.
Any input would be appreciated.
PLEASE NO SPOILERS!!

I was literally just drafting up a thread with these exact questions...weird.

1. Seasons 1 and 2 equal books 1 and 2. Book 3 is split into 2 seasons because it is so badass
2. Read the books. But realize you will be treated like a jew in Poland in 1940 if you are a book reader on this board

Couldn't agree more. I loved the TV experience and didn't want to lose that, but the anticipation just killed me so I read them. Best decision I've ever made. They're absolutely brilliant and infinitely better than the TV series (coming from someone who never says that books are better than movies/tv)

Still waiting for Charlton Heston to make a TD account and save his chosen people from persecution.

I started off as just a show watcher and started reading the books this season. The books explain things better than the show does and are told in different character point of views. The books and show really work well together and complement each other IMO, which can't be said for many movie and tv series adapted from books. Quite a few of the actors in the show are amazing and really add on to their already great book versions of themselves.

In total honesty, I'd say GoT has pulled off one of the best casting jobs of all time. 99% of the actors fit their book characters perfectly.

They really do. Peter Dinklage IS Tyrion, Conleth Hill IS Varys, and Charles Dance IS Tywin Lannister to a t. I could go on and name everyone else but that would take a while

They really did do a great job. I read somewhere that the English were complaining about the accents of the characters. They didn't like that two characters of the same region of Westeros or family may have accents from different parts of the U.K. I thought it was a pretty ridiculous thing to nitpick about. It's a fantasy world after all.
They were particularly tough on Peter Dinklage, who does such an awesome job as Tyrion.

Didn't start watching the show until mid March. Now I'm 200 pages away from finishing A Feast for Crows and just received my A Dance of Dragons yesterday.
Start reading. And if you want the five books for fairly cheap I suggest you go to amazon right now. You get them them for a about $48. That's 4 paper backs and one hard back.

HBO is always money when it comes to casting. Rome, Deadwood, The Sopranos, they were all just perfect.

read them for sure...like I said in a thread yesterday. Storm of Swords is the most fun I've ever had reading a book.

I think if you started watching the show first...you will of course think of the characters as the actors.
Reading the books first you take certain things differently IMO. Event happen and the show portrays them a little differently than I did in my head.

when i read a book i always end up casting actors in my head so this is perfect. it's already done for me.
