State of Decay vs. The Walking Dead

I think we've probably played enough of both to form some opinions. Granted, where the story goes and ends with SoD could sway this. Either way, both great XBLA downloads
IMO:
TWD
Pros:
-Great story
-Relatable characters
-Great ending (I won'ts spoil it)
-Decision making
Cons:
-Point and click can get boring
-It seems like no matter what decision you make, you'll end up where the game wants you
Neither pro nor con:
-pretty much linear
SoD
Pros:
-Open world
-Very realistic
-Tons of options
-Decent combat system for what it is
-Critical thinking and decision making a must
Cons:
-Super glitchy (can be fixed)
-No save option (auto save only)
-Can be a grind at times
-AI can be dumb as hell sometimes
Overall...I'm going to have to go with SoD at this point. The open world and in-depth options put it over the top. Not a very in-depth storyline (at least not yet, as I haven't followed the "main quests" much) but you can feel yourself making decisions you'd really make yourself during Z-day. The story and characters are top-notch in TWD, but in SoD it's so realistic. You have a real good feeling in TWD who will live and die. In SoD, you just don't know what the hell is gonna happen. For all its glitches and some of the stuff that could have been done better, for a new devs first game of this scale, I give Undead Labs an A+ on this one. Looking forward to more games from both TellTale and Undead.

Shouldn't the thread title be - MJ plays more than 30 minutes in two games?

I played both and I don't think it's even close. State of Decay IMO is better than Walking Dead and I also like it much better than Dead Island FWIW. For 20 dollars this game puts the other two to shame.

1.
2.
Hey man...I can't help my gaming restrictions. We are polar opposites. I knock out chunks of games as time allows whereas you complete 5 games a week. I just don't have that kind of time bro.
By the way, in the past 3-4 months I've completed
Dark souls
Deus ex
Bioshock
So suck it

it's sad how bad the voice acting on Dead Island 1 & 2 are compared to a $20 XBLA title.

Agreed. I guess I've been wanting an open world zombie apocalypse style for a while and this one nails it.
Undead Nightmare was fun and open world, but it was just more of John Marston doing everything

I don't have any specific comments to make on which is "better," seeing as I haven't played "State of Decay" but...
I don't consider this a con for TWD. I like that it tells a well focused story following this small band of characters through the major events of their survival.
However, and I could be wrong about this, I think the majority of this board will agree with you.

good point and really what makes TWD a good game. I guess I'm kind of talking out both sides of my mouth by saying the story is great but the linearity is a con. I guess I'd like for the decisions you to truly make a difference. It just felt like no matter what you chose, you were going to end up in the same place.

TWD is amazing because it spins a linear narrative that is excellent. You can have a linear story if it done very well - definitely not a negative (imo) in the case of TWD.

SoD in incredibly in depth to boot.
Kind of makes you wonder WTF you're paying $60 for when they can clearly make a superior product available for $20
FWIW, Dead Island is still great fun in that arcade hack n slash style. But this damn SoD...I can't quit playing the SOB. I'm more worried that Marcus gets a hot meal than my own daughter (obviously joking, no need to call SS)

I think State of Decay is what everyone wanted Walking Dead to be. I enjoyed the hell out of TWD, but I just think Undead Labs knocked it out of the park with SoD.
I think most of the issues people are having with SoD will be ironed out very soon. I'm saving my second play through for the update.

Damn, fine. OP updated to reflect the linear play of TWD is not a negative

Another positive for this Undead Labs.
Made a great game? Check
Great price? Check
Quickly address issues (or at least let us know they are aware of issues and are attempting to resolve them)? Check
If I'm Undead I'm like "Bitch, I just gave you a kickass game for $20. I ain't patching shite for at least a month"
