i'd go ahead and silicone caulk it down, once you're done (or if you have grout from your bathroom floor, you can use that as well).

For someone who knows what they are doing, pretty quick. if you are just going off of a youtube tutorial then you better block off a full day.

i know this from experience. The actually install is relatively straightforward but making it leak free is somewhat time consuming.

If you didn't know the toilet had a wax ring...............you better just call someone to do it.

Again, concern about this issue is noted, but I will move forward with the project myself.

Thank you to those with the helpful posts

For a first time DIY toilet guy. Spend an extra $10 and get Sani Seal foam toilet seal. Wax rings are a pain in the arse.

u definitely can do it but it will be a little frustrating. U will prob save abt $150 doing it yourself. Plus once u get it down the next one will be easy.

There are times to hire a plumber but toilet repair is NOT one of them unless u having damage to the main drain line or water intake line.

Interesting.

Better than wax for a new install?

Bolts stay in place so they line up with the toilet. Easy to set the toilet with one person. If you screw up it's not a one shot deal like the wax ring. I use them in my rental units seam to seal better than wax. Can bounce back and take the abuse of a 300lb welfare fatty.

Wear some latex or other disposable gloves while fooling with the wax ring. Especially the old one. You're welcome.

1. Turn off the water flush the toilet to empty the tank. Go get a beer.
2. Use the plunger to get 90% of the old water out of the bowl. Use a sponge if you want to get the rest out. Sip beer.
3. Unscrew the two screws on either side of the toilet and disconnect the water drain line (have a cup handy to catch the water in the line. Sip beer.
4. pull the toilet up and take it outside. Finish first beer. Grab second.
5. clean the old wax ring off, I use a old paint scraper. Sip beer.
6. unbox the new toilet, put new screws in where the old ones were, apply the wax ring to the bottom of the new toilet Multiple sips throughout this process.
7. Gently seat the toilet aliging the screws (you could use help at this point) Get buddy a beer, continue sipping.
8. after it's seated put some weight on the toilet to crush the wax ring. tighent everything up. Sit in toilet, sip beer.
9. attach the water line and fill the tank. Finish second beer whilst tank filling.
10. flush toilet and take a crap.

Funny timing, but I just took my toilet out to put down tile. When I did, the flange that the screws/bolts interlock into came up for some reason. The standard install is straight forward, but I'm not familiar with what to do if the spot where the new screws need to go is not there I may need a plumber.

Not sure you would want to do that. If you ever have a leak you will want the water to be visible around the base of the toilet so you know there is a problem. The silicone would prevent this and will hold the water which will cause damage especially with wood frame houses or if you happen to have wood floors in the bathroom.

I installed a sink in <45 minutes. I'd imagine a toilet would be easier.

not long and not too terribly hard. just make sure the water is off

The water needs to be on. Its got a ground fault water interrupter (GFWI) on it to prevent getting sprayed.
