Not leaving smelling like an ashtray is huge for me, particularly when I go straight from work.

What offended you more ?? The smoking ? Or the fact that he was drinking a light, domestic beer ?

The smoking for sure. I can handle the light beer, but what's the point in going to a place that seems unnecessarily expensive to satisfy a simple need that is available elsewhere within close proximity for a cheaper price.........

With that logic, why would anyone ever go to a bar to even buy a beer ??

In the case of the bulldog or pelican house I will say that none of the beers I drink there are available for consumption at home, at least a vast majority aren't.

To answer the overall question, pussy.

Gives me the chance to try new beers either that I can't otherwise find, or would have to buy a full six pack. Frankly, before I got into craft beer, I thought bars were a huge waste of time and money

Ahhh .. a beer snob, eh ?? You get 6-packs of most of those beers at Albertson's or Calandros for what 2 pints cost in there ..

Well, like you stated earlier price isn't an issue.

Everyone knows a maven doesn't shop locally. Get that shite shipped in or packed in by a mule from out of state.

Any place in louisiana is good.....for Louisiana. ...some awesome places in cali, denver, chicago, etc

I would say that places like Avenue Pub and the Chimes hold up pretty well on the national scene

The only thing that makes Naja's Place better IMO is the location.

Maybe once Pelican House South opens off Coursey. Only then will it cater to its high income clientele and truly be worth me revisiting.

Please point me to the Albertsons where I can buy a sixer of NOLA Irish Channel Stout. Thanks in advance.

Have you had the gumbo ?

no, i thought it was pretty expensive and didnt bother with it.

quote:

I waited almost 45 minutes for it .. Don't fall back on the age old "we'll, it's not a restaurant, so you don't go there for food" excuse for that .. How hard is it to ladle gumbo into a teacup and microwave it ?

i dont know there method of getting out food but i would imagine that theres a line of tickets and yours gets put at the end of the line and is dealt with in order. if this is the case and the kitchen is backed up, the waitress should alert the kitchen that theres a gumbo on said ticket.

quote:

The food at the Bulldog comes out quickly and is pretty tasty .. You don't go there for food, but they do it right

i agree. i dont know who cooks the food at PH but im buddies with the guys in the bulldog kitchen and they actually care about the food they cook. makes a difference

quote:

I just think high rent, combined with a high internal overhead = higher prices over there .. $3.50 for a pint of PBR ?

is that what you were drinking? im just wondering what was so expensive. the prices are a little high but i expect that with craft beer in a nice setting like that.

quote:

I'll be back, but the place needs to definitely work out a number of kinks ..

agree.

seems like your main complaint is with the food and i agree that they need to fix it. they really just need to pick a direction and go with it. stop trying to please everyone because it will never happen

Nah .. I didn't drink a PBR .. I had an IPA .. I just asked the chick behind the bar how much it was after I noticed the tap after she seemed to proudly tell us, "we have 136 beers on tap, none of which are domestic" ..

Actually, there were maybe 15 people total in there when my gumbo took forever .. and they have a nice, state of the art, full kitchen, compared to the Bulldog's small one .. Those dudes pump the food out at the Bulldog and it is good, above average bar grub .. I just think these guys didn't completely think the food side out at PH ..

But, like I said .. Next time we're in town .. I'll go back and give 'em another shot ..

Are they all European? Sounds like they need to educate their staff more.

That's exactly what she said ..

I didn't have the heart to ask her where those 11 different Abita taps are brewed ..

He was responding to food times so I assume by care he meant they don't dick around and get your food to you whenever they feel like it.

"Domestic" is a term of art in hospitality. Next time you are at a restaurant offering deals on "domestic" beers, try to order an Abita and see what they say
