The way both pitchers were throwing you knew this was going to be a low-scoring game so... you try to scratch across a run...

Early in the game (4th inning or so..) Laird gets on w/his infield single bringing up Bregman. I know he's the 3 hole hitter etc... but I really thought PM would have him bunt.. moving Laird over and giving Katz and Rhymes each a shot at a single and 1 run. But.. Bregman swang away and hit into a DP.

Just curious.. if anyone else thought he would bunt.

I would have developed laird into a guy who could steal bases. How can someone that fast not be good at stealing bases?

With the way bregs swings early in the count a hit and run would have been nice but as it was already stated we won

What are you, a redneck?

Yeah, I'd have bunted him over. I know what Manieri was probably doing - trying to get a hitter's count and calling a hit-and-run. But he does that so much with the meat of his order that he's kind of predictable, and pitchers just go at us. I can't knock him, though. Every call he made seemed to work - from working Gray's pitch count to the substitutions in the eighth...Bertmanesque!

Never bunt the three-hole hitter.

He should of bunted but he didn't. I would of bunted 100% of the time in that situation. Sometimes he manages like an American League manager.

I am honestly stunned at all the people in this thread suggesting we bunt Bregman in that situation. Its Alex Bregman, you don't do that. I would've been pissed at Mainieri if he did.

I'm glad Skip bunted Cresse with runners at 1st and 2nd with no outs in the bot of the 9th tie game against Stanford.....oh wait

No, I would not have bunted Bregman. In hindsight, maybe it would have been a good idea, since for some reason Bregman was struggling with Gray more than anyone else, but there was no way to predict that. Bregman is our best hitter and so it only made since to assume that allowing him to swing was our best chance to get to Gray.

Our strategy last night was perfect, and it worked exactly as intended. Work the count. Get Gray out of the game before Nola. That's what we did. That's why we won.
