Hawks to fans: "Chris Paul & Dwight Howard become more and more of a reality"

The Hawks may have violated the NBA’s anti-tampering policy by mentioning Dwight Howard and Chris Paul by name in a recent letter sent to prospective ticket buyers.
...The letter, obtained by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, was on team letterhead and headlined “Hot New Player news: Chris Paul and Dwight Howard.” It began with the statement: “The buzz around our offseason is more than heating up. With massive cap space, 4 draft picks, and free agency rapidly approaching, we sit in the best position in the NBA. Player interest is skyrocketing as the possibilities of landing Chris Paul & Dwight Howard become more and more of a reality.”
...The league has issued hefty fines in the past for tampering, particularly in 2010 when LeBron James became an unrestricted free agent, for the mere mention of a player under contract with another team. The Hawks were one team disciplined.
Co-owner Michael Gearon was fined $25,000 for comments he made to the AJC on May 27, 2010 about then-Cavaliers forward James. Gearon said “If somebody came to us tomorrow and said you can have LeBron for max money and it puts you in the luxury tax, I’d do it in a heartbeat. But am I going to do that for [Zydrunas] Ilgauskas? Am I going to do it for Jermaine O’Neal? I don’t think so …”

Hawks gonna Hawk.
And I'd honestly be more than okay with building this club without wither of the two.

Since the league kept CP3 from going to the Lakers over something trivial, I'm gonna guess this means 0% chance the Hawks can sign either player

Hawks taken themselves out of it before it starts
What's new?

I think CP3 is setting Howard up. He is saying, yeah man, let's go to Atlanta and run shite, but then as soon as Howard signs, Paul has a change of heart and signs with the Lakers instead throwing deuces Howard's way.

The new CBA makes it hard, if not impossible, for the Lakers to get a high-end free agent with their current payroll.
The Lakers have $74m in payroll for next season before Howard signs a contract, which immediately puts them into the luxury tax. They're only allowed to go higher than that if they are resigning their own players or bringing in players at the NBA minimum.

And how would the Lakers sign Chris Paul?

I'm guessing a $100,000 fine.

Amnesty Kobe Bryant.
Kobe might even be on board considering his injury and how long he is going to be out.
This saves $80 mil in luxury taxes. Plenty of $ saved to make it up to Kobe some time down the road.

Haven't the latest reports been that Kobe plans on playing at the start of next season?

Wanting and doing are 2 completely different things, and Kobe knows he is going to need some help if this past year is any indication.

I guess this would be pretty bad arse

Kobe would have to take a huge paycut to rejoin the team in 2014-2015.

Arthur Triche wouldn't have allowed this!

They would still have to pay his $30 + mil for next season, but it would save $80 mil + in luxury tax. They would lose their bird rights after the '14 season which means they wouldn't be able to offer him more than anyone else, but I'm certain the Lakers organization could come up with a pretty enticing package for him.

yeah
I think the luxury tax starts at 70 million so with:
kobe - 30.4
pau - 19.3
nash - 9.3
artest 7.7
blake 4.0
duhon 3.9
hill 3.5
That's 78.1 million (plus some change for the rest of the roster). So (if I understand their situation) they'd have to drop over 8 million PLUS whatever the value of their FA agent signing
The only way that seems likely is to amnesty Kobe (to make a move for a real star like CP3) or to trade Pau and pick up a middle tier FA?

I thought they were both unrestricted free agents.
If so, how does one "tamper" with an unrestricted free agent?
