That might be the pier that got wiped out in the storms, if I'm thinking about the same one. Not sure if they rebuilt it.

Well, another idea could be to park at that public beach on the East side of the Perdido Pass bridge, then walk around to the other side of the bridge. That way you can avoid the other folks on the other side, have some privacy and still catch some fish.

Head towards P'Cola and get in bay and wade fish. I used to catch a few trout in the am just dicking around.

I thought about toting the yak down there, but it just makes me nervous not having scupper holes just in case i flip that bitch. Probably not likely inshore but still worries me. I might give it a shot though, it would be awesome to cruise down Ono.

Figured Id bump this instead of starting a new topic. I was just enlightened to "dixie bar" at the end of Fort Morgan road. shite just got real...looks like bull reds and black tips are more than common in this area.

Any feedback on it? I have been going to Fort Morgan / Gulf Shores every year for the last 6 years and have never heard of this.

On vacation in OBA now. I fished Dixie bar over the weekend on a local friend's boat. Supposedly will catch bull reds always if there is any tide, BUT we went they 3 dozen croakers and a dozen big live shrimp and only caught sharks.

I've been yak fishing around that private pier by the pass the past 2 days. Yesterday while bottom fishing caught lots of catfish, and some type of small jacks and then under a cork, at least a 4 foot black tip shark, which almost spooled me. Gave me a good ride around though.

This morning on a shad colored rattle trap, I caught a few Spanish mackerels and something huge that gt off before I could see it ( probably shark?)

I'm going back out this evening, ill be in a tan Ride 135 if anyone is out here

Yeah, but you can't fish the bar from the bank. I've parked at the fort and walked down to the point where the pass meets the beach and wore out the hardheads, but no reds.

However, there are tons of White Trout and a few specks that you can see busting the surface early in the AM just on the inside of the pass. Maybe 100 yards "north" of where the beach makes the 90 degree turn into the bay. Popping cork sort of deal should do it, or a dudley.

Thanks for the report man. Headed to OB in August, looking for a few spots to surf fish. How is the bank around dixie bar as far as crowding? My first guess was to go under the bridge at the pass but im sure i would be bumping elbows with everyone else.

So, its a bit of a drive from OB to the end of Ft. Morgan. Call it 45 min to be safe, but when I was working the bank, there was only one other dude there. You'll be fine...won't catch anyone in your backcast! You want to park in the parking lot right before you get to the Dearborn Battery (look on google maps, you'll see the battery and the little lot before you get there). Park, walk down to the beach, hang a right, and walk down in front of the fort to where it doglegs back into the bay.

In this pic, follow that straight line as though it continues to the beach. (the line that looks like an old wall in front of the fort. Fish from that line back to the bay side for a few hundred yards until you get to the pier.

If you're fishing for reds, haul off and cast that sucker as far out into the current (closer to the Gulfside) as you can. I would suggest something living as your bait...pinfish if you can find them. You'll see areas where currents are coming together, dolphins like to chase baitfish through there.

If you're chasing trout or anything else, fish early in the AM in the slick water area between the aforementioned line and the pier back by the ferry.

Its also kinda cool to fish in the shadow of an old Civil War fort right behind you. Your mind will start to wander quickly about what went down behind you.

Legit post man, I really appreciate it.

We started off staying at Shipwatch North in Fort Morgan a few years ago, cant believe I was missing good fishing right down the road. I have caught nice fish from the surf at the house there too. Now we stay in GS / OB and the fishing is way short of what I did in Fort Morgan.

Now for reds at Fort Morgan, do you just bottom fish with the pyramid weight setup, let it sit and wait?

Spent some time at the caribe a few years ago. Watched a guy murder the doormats by bouncing gulp around the rip rap and docks. He was fishing from the bank.

To be honest, you'll need a horseshoe up your arse to catch one from the beach. The Dixie Bar is loaded with Reds...its just loaded with reds about 300 yards further out than you can cast. And you can't wade out that far as the current through the pass is swift and it gets deep. I would think the pyramid set up would be just fine. OR you could bring two rods and let one freespool w/ an egg sinker while you fished the other under a pyramid. Just remember there is (at times) an assload of current through there. Bring something heavy enough to keep your bait from drifting too much (unless you're doing the freespooling thing).

Don't get me wrong, people have caught reds from that stretch plenty of times before...its just tough to compete with whatever the natural draw is to the Dixie Bar.

With live or cut bait, you're going to have something tug on your line...be it a shark, redfish, jack cravelle, ladyfish, whathaveyou.

Oh, and I saw a tarpon there in real life once. Darted by while I was casting for specs. First and only time I've ever seen one. :CSB:

Awesome, I will gladly pull anything in, just never had a chance to get into the reds before. Contemplating bringing my kayak down there, but it doesnt have scupper holes, and the other men of my family will be with me so I would have to leave them at the beach.

Now having a yak is a game changer. I have a sure thing (well, close anyways) of a red spot on the back side of Ono Island that has produced reds 3/5 trips I've taken. It's one specific sunken dock.

Or Yak on over to the Jetties in Perdido Pass (hug the bank obviously, and wear a PFD) but freak yes, man. Wear out the sheepshead and reds.

Or go into Mo Fishin' Bait and Tackle in Orange Beach and let them know your situation with the yak. They are good honest folks who wont hold out on you (even if that means them telling you you're screwed).

Lot of helpful replies recently. I ended up not fishing tonight and grilling some store bought snapper and Cobia instead(was awesome with an Oj and cilantro marinade)

But the Dixie bar comments are true as far as I know, I ve seen video proof of multple bull reds last weekend all on live bait. Sounds like the key is live bait and strong falling tide. Good luck out there

Ok, bumping this thread since my trip is coming up in about 3 weeks. Salt Lifers help me out, I have attached a TL;DR of all information gathered from you.

Wade fishing Fort Morgan Point -

Fish Bay side to the pier. Last 2 hours of falling tide. Look for current meeting and crashing together.

Reds -

5/0 Kahle hook w/ 30# leader. Popping cork w/ live shrimp, 1-2 oz pyramid setup, or freespool 1/2oz egg sinker.

Live Bait - 4-6" croakers, shrimp, finger mullet

Artificial Bait - Gold spoon, Gulp Shrimp

Specks -

Fish slick water early morning.

Live shrimp under cork or Topdogs, Mirrolures.

Perdido Pass Bridge -

Fish at night, close to end of West Jetty.

Got-Cha, Spoon, Suspending Mirrolure (51 or 52 series in silver)

I hand wrote all of this shite out to bring with me. I will probably get to fish each spot only once, so I want to get it right the first time.
