Thinking about adding a deck (33' x 14') off the back of my house. What do deck contractors charge to do this? TIA

I am looking at putting one in myself...a 20x24 and materials alone are going to run me about 1700.00.

treated wood of course and using 2x6's for the decking. Nothing real fancy with mine... just off the ground and 2 levels.

sorry. no roof. just a 1 level deck 2' to 4' off the ground with railings. Dude just quoted me $6k. I thought that was rediculous for a 14' x 33' deck

Why use 2x6 for decking? Why not just use 1x6 decking? Would be much cheaper and no loss of strength?

ETA: decking boards may be 5/4 thick, I can't rememeber

Nope. If a board is going to warp it's going to warp. I built a fence last year and the post on the gate (6x6) warped. I had to redo the gate.

ETA: If you screw them down on the runners underneath and not nail, you can pretty well eliminate any warping.

Almost all wood will warp, screws help keep boards honest...

damn, thanks. I think I will have to do this project myself and save $4k. That is too much to pay for building a simple deck... rent a post hole digger, order wood, put beer on ice...

might be able to afford an outdoor fireplace now...

I built one at my old house. It took me a few weekends working by myself. It really wasn't bad at all. Just make sure you have a really good cordless drill or three. I have a impact that was money on my deck. An impact driver won't strip the threads on a screw. Downside is that they will wear batteries down faster.

Correction the software put in to remove and replace... Build new is ~$4900, labor is $2900 of the total...

thanks, wick!! Great input... In saving $3 grand, I will be able to afford some extras. The last deck I built was about 10 years ago and I remember it was half this size, cost $700 in materials and took me 3 days to build. So, this seams about right...
