After making bomb on last hole, Ty Dunlap gets penalized for slow play and that sends A&M into playoff for last spot. They lose playoff

I watched the segment about it on Golf Central last night. The kid who got the penalty handled it much better than most people would have.

I saw some people tweeting about it. There's a time and place to enforce slow play, and your final hole with a spot on the line in the NCAA Elite 8 isn't one of them.

This wasn't really either. Reminds me of Augusta with the kid.

Here's an excerpt from the Golf Channel article:
Oh the irony. It takes you FOREVER to assess a penalty for slow play?!
And when I immediately read the article, I thought they were approaching dusk and knew there might be a need to have a playoff so they wanted to keep everyone up to pace. But I guess not.
Pathetic, NCAA.

That added stroke – assessed after more than a half-hour deliberation in the clubhouse at Capital City Club – dropped the Aggies from sixth place into a four-way tie for eighth at 2-over 842. The top eight teams after Thursday advanced to the match-play portion of the championship, which begins Friday.

Unfortunately, logic & common sense isn't a prerequisite to work for the NCAA.

Evidently, the ncaa runs the championship similar to a usga event with four time checkpoints over the course of the round.
They even give you one warning on the first missed time but then the ncaa makes you "liable" for a penalty after your second missed time. The reason why it took so long to asses the penalty is because once your group misses the second time and are "liable" for a penalty, they take you in to "discuss" the situation and you can plead your case
Seems kinda crazy. Evidently the individual champion was also "liable" for a slow play penalty yesterday but after discussion was not given a penalty.
Just seems like a strange way to hand out penalties and I think it's crazy that the ncaa does not enforce this during the season but decides to do it at the championship.

What is the time that the PGA would like to have its players get around in? 4:30, 4:45? How often is this met? I think the kid explaining that they got a hole down while waiting to drive a par 4 had a lot to do with it. Stupid application of the rule there

The group that got accessed the penalty included a golfer from ASU and the NCAA did not access the ASU golfer the same 1 stroke penalty for slow play that would have resulted in a 9th place finish for ASU.
