I'm looking into getting a smoker... any suggestions? I don't want to spend a fortune, so no Green Egg.

What do you want to cook? Do you prefer charcoal or wood? Do you want the ease of electric or propane? I have a cheapo electric Masterbuild mini-frige shape design that does excellent poltry and pork, (I've yet to figure out brisket on it). I use my large offset for brisket. How much is a fortune? You can pickup a Jumbo Ole-Smokey for like $60 and out lots of people if you use it correctly.

WSM, 18 1/2" or 22" FTW.
Easy to use, great temp control, charcoal use, only

Haven't decided about the heat source. What do you recommend? I'm mainly looking to do chicken and pork, but would like to try brisket. I would like to stay under $100.

Under $100- wal mart and HD sell Brinkman Gourmet smoker and grill between $50 and $100. This was actually my very first smoker 24 years ago.

Under $100 is difficult. I think I'd go with a Jumbo Ole Smokey- you can get the smokey long legs so you don't have to bend over to cook and can put a few bricks under the fire plate for grilling. I've cooked probably a dozen or so briskets on one and have never had a single complant. I would also highly recommend one of these Themometers. They keep track of your fire temp as well as your meat. You can set it so that the alarm with go off if it gets too low or too high. I got mine for father's day last year and it's awesome.

I have the MES 30. With a few accessories it provides as close to "Set It and Forget It" as you will find.

I have enjoyed mine. www.smokingmeatforums.com has an extensive review by owners on these Masterbuilt models.
