I've watched 8 episodes and yest it does.
I imagine the first episode will seem much funnier upon rewatch.

Its not horrible, you are just not used to it

it gets better. they're throwing a lot at you, 6 years worth of catching up and intertwining stories. once you see how the stories come together, it becomes vintage AD

First episode was horrible. It reaches its peak at the buster episode.

Here's what the person whom I respect most when it comes to Arrested Development opinions said (he watched the entire season Sunday and yesterday): "It would have been great if they would have kept it at 10 episodes, but expanding the season to 15 left a lot of holes and poorly written jokes & scenarios."

10 episodes would not have been enough time to get the story through

There are holes because there's a season 5

This. Just finished the new season yesterday. Was disappointed with the first episode at first. Finished the season. Just spent 15 minutes on the phone with my uncle laughing so hard I literally cried about some of the stuff that happened. Can't wait to watch it again.

I dont buy the "poorly written" line.

Episodes 11-15 were the best the first time through so I couldn't disagree with that more.
That's really when the whole story started to come together and you could start putting the pieces together you were given as far back as the first episode.

So there weren't episodes/scenes where you thought they were trying to be funny but it just didn't work? i.e. - they stretched themselves too thin and just couldn't come up with enough jokes to fill all that air time?

I never felt that way

I didn't feel that way.
The only time it didn't feel like old AD was after the first couple of episodes, because I didn't know what was going on.
By the end, there was hilarity in the form of season 1-3 references, season 4 references, and newly written material.

The first 3 episodes sucked but keep going, they were all set up for the rest of them which are great

I felt the exact same way. Watched episode 1 last night. I can only hope it gets better. I think I had a forced laugh when Michael flew into the seal and the hook and loose seal were in the background at the end of the scene. Also, tipping African-Americans was great. Otherwise, the episode sucked.
I think AD is great, but it is too much of a circle jerk on this board. I loved seasons 1 and 2, but I did not care for the Mr. F story line in season 3. It is one of my favorite comedies ever, if not my favorite one, but you guys tend to over-exaggerate the greatness of the show a little.

It gets better.
I saw my first episode 10 years ago so I can't really remember why I stuck it out and kept watching but I was glad I did. Getting into season 4 is comparable to introducing someone new to the series. They will usually watch the first couple episodes of season 1 and think "meh" but if they stick it out and let it start tying itself together and begin to understand the storyline and characters, they will usually tend to love it.
I'll consider myself an AD "fanboy" I guess because I watched it when it originally aired, watched reruns on IFC, and then all of it Netflix too and it also took me a couple episodes of season 4 to "get it" and realize what they were trying to do. It definitely picks up.
