how was the old I-10 Twin Span completely destroyed by Katrina... yet the Hwy 11 bridge stood strong... about the same height over the water and only a mile or so away from the twin spans... if that

Back in the day, they used slide rules, which were much more imprecise, so they overengineered everything. Now the tolerances are much finer. Thanks, computers

but they can't keep that drawbridge functioning for more than 2 months at a time

disclaimer: just relating a story of how unlucky people can be

some guy was driving along near my house (about 5 years ago) when a tree fell on the cab of his truck going about 45 mph and killed him instantly. I drove by it shortly after it happened and I have no words to describe it.

The #SkagitBridge was classified by the National Bridge Inventory as “functionally obsolete” in both 2000 and 2010.

The Seattle Times?@seattletimes
Clarification: "Functionally obsolete" does not mean a bridge is necessarily unsafe.

IIRC, the rivers in that area tend not to be too deep, which would help.

problem is it's really cold (30-40 degrees)... it's all snowmelt going downstream

I actually crossed this bridge this afternoon and noticed how bad the current was......anything or unfortunately anyone in it was washed well downstream

That's a shitty, obsolete design. And I can see the rust on those trusses from what looks to be over 100 ft away. No way that bridge passed any maintenance tests in the last decade. State is about to get sued.

Yup!

According to this article.....

quote:

The bridge was built in 1955 and was listed as "structurally obsolete" by the National Bridge Inventory in its most recent assessment. In a 2010 evaluation, the group said the bridge is "somewhat better than minimum adequacy to tolerate being left in place as is."

Newest eyewitness reports are that a truck with an oversized load hit the bridge structure and triggered the collapse.

Too many people are quick to assume it's a bad bridge.

No they didn't.

We have to fix shitty design work of the past all the time. They used to neglect a whole bunch of crap. There are multi-story structures all over the place that aren't designed for wind loading.

The radio said that they rescued 3 from the water and that there didn't appear to be any deaths. They said that they have a dive team in there right now to check the wreckage, but that they don't expect to find anyone based on eyewitness reports.

I think with the truck hitting the bridge it probably gave people enough of a warning to slam on their brakes.

Local news is showing a truck they believe was involved in hitting the bridge that kept going south on I-5 afterwards

Bridges are designed to withstand collision from both vehicles and boats. Still a bad bridge.

Literally my nightmare. I have a huge fear of driving on a bridge that collapses.
