Mavs shopping pick, eyeing Howard (and CP3)

If Dwight Howard is going to wind up in Dallas, it will take some shuffling of the future. [The Mavericks], with their first lottery draft pick in a dozen years firmly in hand, have their eyes on a bigger prize. Multiple sources have told ESPN.com's Chad Ford the Mavs are likely to shop the pick in hopes of creating the cap space necessary to make a run at [Howard] in free agency. The 13th overall pick has a cap hold of $1,655,300. ... The hope is to sell Howard or Chris Paul -- who would each have to sacrifice a fifth year on the max contract that he could get from the Lakers and Clippers, respectively -- on the possibility of building a championship contender. "We'd love to get one of the main guys," Nowitzki said last week.

Should the Pels get involved with trying to acquire this pick from the Mavs? Do you think it could benefit us?

Yes. They should be looking to add picks. In this draft, how much of a difference in quality is there between 6 and 16?

Sure but additional moves need to be made. We are already a young team with no leadership, need some vets.

what would the Pelicans offer?
who to get at 13 shabazz?
or trade 6 and 13 for #4

I really can't see him landing in Dallas. Outside of Dirk, they really have nobody on that roster

Only after the draft if we like who they picked and CP3 has signed with the Clippers. I have no problem helping the Mavs get Howard. By the time we're contending Dirk will have retired and 3-4 years from now I wouldn't fear a team built around Howard and his bad back. Also, they'll get their 5th year if they move. Just like LeBron and Bosh ended up doing S&Ts when they could have walked, so will CP3 and Howard. Teams get a trade exception and pick, players get extra years.

If they are looking to dump someone like Marion with the pick, no.
If they are looking to straight up sell it, sure. Its not my money.

Depends on a lot of things. Is the use of our cap space better spent on taking on bad contracts in order to get picks, or using it in free agency. Free agency this year is bad and the draft is bad. Also, how much would a buy out of Marion cost us as he will not play here. Would we get them to add Crowder to the trade to get some benefit with the pick. Typically 1st rounders are sold for $3 million. However, #13 is a lot higher than normal sold picks. So, if we can get Marion to accept $5 million and get Crowder (and maybe a future pick) it may be worth it if a player is there the Pelicans covet (i.e. Saric or Muhammed).

since there is no hard cap and dallas is willing to have three big contracts on the books, i dont get this issue. but if it's true, there are only two options for dallas in this case.
1. give up the 14th pick and a lagniappe to whoever takes 35year old marion @2yrs/$18mil+trade kicker.
2. draft a euro player and leave him there til a current less desirable's salary falls off the books.

Wrong, it is 1 year, $9m, and a 15% trade kicker.
He's also got an ETO, which is believed to have a June 30 deadline. If he sees that he's likely to be traded somewhere he doesn't want to go, he may opt out and try to get on with a team like the Clip Show or Heat.

I wish we could trade for him and then have him opt out.
But it doesn't work like that unfortunately.

If he opts in, we trade for him, and he refuses to report, his options are to get suspended by Stern for "conduct detrimental to the NBA" or negotiate a buyout.
The timing of it is also critical for him, as the start of free agency is a time when he can get the most money for his services if he hits the market.
fricking with us by engaging in protracted buyout talks would reduce the chances of him getting a long-term contract from someone else or teams like the Heat being able to afford him.

this is true my friend. i was looking at this years money also
. now i will edit that and no one will ever know. Posted on 5/23/13 at 10:25 am to teke184
I meant that we could trade for him before June 30th and THEN he opts out. So we would have gotten the asset for nothing.
But unfortunately that's not how it works. The trade wouldn't be completed until after that and he could opt out in the meantime, or he has already opted in and then he either reports or we do a buyout...which really doesn't help us that much as his contract is guaranteed, so he has no real incentive to take a large discount, and our cap is not helped that much.

we take the 14th pick, marion+max cash to offset his 10mil salary. in return, dallas gets a thank you and told to be happy about getting rid of that 9mil salary

His "incentive" is that, if he wants out of New Orleans, he has to take a haircut.
Otherwise, his options are to play out the year with us or let Stern impose punishment on him, which could include suspending him for the entire season.
Stern's punishment can be appealed if it goes over something like 12 games, but a refusal to report after a trade is something the league generally looks down upon.
About the only exception I can think of was Jim Jackson, who refused to report to the Hornets after a trade in 2005. He was later flipped to the Suns for three players.

The last half of that statement translates to "A top 55-protected 2nd round pick 5 years from now", which is what we got when dumping the salaries of Mo Peterson, Rasual Butler, and others.

It usually gets worked out and the players very rarely take a lot less. just the way it works.

didnt remember this so i search and found:
Hornets trade Jim Jackson to Suns
PHOENIX (AP) — The Phoenix Suns added a veteran scorer to their young roster on Friday, sending three players to the New Orleans Hornets for Jim Jackson. The Suns, who bolted to a 31-4 start but had lost five straight going into Friday night's game against San Antonio, sent swing man Casey Jacobsen, 23, and forwards Maciej Lampe, 19, and Jackson Vroman, 23, to the Hornets.

How old are you? Seriously.
13? 14? I'm not being demeaning, I really want to know.
You have to be really young not to remember that. Or only a fan for 2-3 years.
