I don't think the bats will change," said LSU coach Paul Mainieri, who dislikes the steep decline in home runs. "Once you start to use the excuse of safety, who's going to stick their neck out and say let's use a less-safe bat to increase offense? I'm not willing to do that, are you kidding? I think the only way to improve home runs is perhaps the ball and moving in fences, and we're considering moving them in."

I don't like that idea. I do like the idea of going to a Major League ball though.

Moving the fences in is a terrible idea. Switch to the MLB ball and be done with it.

Why not use a major league ball? If a hotter ball increases offense what is the disadvantage ?

Moving the fences in would take away triples. LSU's power alleys are as short as they can be. The only possible movement that I could see is to move the foul poles in 5-10 feet, and the centerfield fence in 5-10 feet. Not that I'm really for that.

Good luck recruiting top pitchers with a small ballpark.

This may be a dumb question, but what is the difference in a college ball and an MLB ball?

Stitches are raised on college ball, makes it easier to throw junk stuff like curve and slider.

Major league ball is harder to do that, allows more offense.

It is pretty obvious. I have both a college ball my boy has gotten at LSU game and MLB ball and the difference is pretty noticeable.

The MLB ball can be thrown harder. Every MLB game I watch the pitchers are throwing between 92-97 mph. Every college baseball game I watch the pitchers are throwing between 87-91 mph.

LSU has control over their own ball park, they don't have control over what balls the NCAA uses.

This but also heard Skip say the other day that the MLB ball is also wound tighter giving more pop off the bat.

I don't trust any numbers I see on my TV. Every year, they add 3-4 mph to the gun during the post season just to make the speed of the pitches a talking point.

That being said, the lower seams allows a ball to rotate faster with less interference with the air meaning less movement on off-speed pitches, and balls that have good backspin go further.
