I'm looking at a rock island arms 1911. Doesn't look bad but the price is scaring me, makes me think it is cheap. What does the 1911 experts say?

Man, I am drinking some of that Tennessee Honey you make!

Good deal for the price. Just don't expect a high end gun.

I recently tried the Honey Jack and I love it

Rumor is you can swap the internals to Wilson Combat ones and they're supposedly as fine of a 1911 as you'll ever shoot especially for the money you'll have invested versus other brands. I'm pretty sure Bapple and KR is gonna call blasphemy on that though

I am really starting to enjoy the flavored stuff. Red Stag Black Cherry, a Jim Beam product, is also great for something different as well.

Everything in my soul wants to talk crap on it
But everything I've read says its surprisingly well built and of good quality especially for that price

They are good 1911's (rebranded Armscor). Some will trash them but only because they don't have any real experience with them. I seriously considered a STI Spartan a few years ago. Every ATI I've handled new was rattle free and being a 70's series doesn't hurt either. Hoping I can pick up a GI style ATI on the cheap and rebuild/refinish it as a summer project. Shouldn't be scared just because of the price. Most spending $1000+ on a 1911 are buying a name.

Jack,
The RIA 1911's are solid, dependable, budget minded guns w/ a good warranty and outstanding customer support. They are may have some MIM parts. Some shooters haven't had good results w/ the factory mags. The grips are not very attractive and the finish is, at least in my eyes, a not very appealing Parkerized. Having said that, I have a Citadel Compact model (made by the same parent company, Armscor) that's one of my cc guns. I've been very happy w/ mine, other than the not very attractive finish. RIA is a fine entry level 1911, especially for the shooter who's not certain if he's going to like the 1911, or the shooter who's looking for an inexpensive base gun on which to do some home gunsmithing. Unfortunately, like most all guns, you'll prolly have a very hard time finding one.

Not necessarily BS but you're selling the RIA 1911s pretty hard. Also, with the extra money you'd spend on new internals you could just get a good American 1911 from the start. Wilson parts are quality for sure, but they aren't cheap at all.
I think the best budget 1911 is made by Ruger in either government or commander size. It is ABSOLUTELY worth the extra ~300 bucks compared to a Rock Island.
RIA (Armscor) 1911s are fine but where they lack is fitment of parts, smoothness of triggers, and finish (and non-American production). Like TOTH said, the parkerized finish on the Rock Islands are lacking for sure. They do the job decently, but compared to others, they suck. Then again, if you get a decent Rock Island, it will run just fine and be decently reliable, regardless of the finish being sub-par.
But I will reiterate, Ruger 1911s are where you should go. They are the best entry-level 1911s on the market and are one hell of a deal.

Or buy a frame and make your own custom gun. If you guys want a really good weapon you are going to have to come off of some cash either from the factory or by having it worked over by a smith. A cheap weapon will work fine just dont expect it to perform like one with all the highend parts and trigger work.

Thanks for all the info guys. I'm definitely aware of you get what you pay for. I'm just looking for something in the $500 price range and it sounds worth it.

Not a personal picture of mine but it sure makes the Ruger look awesome.

Dude shot that group with an Ed Brown then placed the Ruger in front of the target for a photo op.
