Why did the cartel leader kill Gus's original partner in the flashback?

same reason gus sliced that dudes throat. to show he isn't dependent on any one person and that he can kill him too at any time.

Because (a) he's a psychopath and (b) to send a message.

To eliminate a potential competitor. Eladio wasn't interested in the meth business at the time. He also didn't appreciate Max giving "free samples" to Eladio's guys.

He would have killed Gus too, but apparently Gus had powerful friends and felt it best to let him live.

that's a pretty good answer, I think this was during the time when the cartels were almost strictly shippers of coke rather than manufacturers of crystal. Gus and his bf were proposing radical change and those in power usually resist any change to a system that appears to be working just fine for them.

This is what I'm confused about.

He says something like "I would kill you too, but I know who you are."

What did he mean by that?

I disagree with this.

I'm with you. Gus sliced that dude's throat because witnesses had seen his face. Cartel blasted Gus's loverboy to show Gus who the fricking boss is. Remember the dude was pissed that Gus was giving meth to all his men.

It's never explicitly stated. All we know is he is from Chile. Even Mike didn't know who Gus really was.

He obviously has some past. I'm glad we don't learn what it was

Vince has said he purposefully wanted Gus to be a mysterious character. I doubt we find out.

Someone earlier got the answer. Gus and his partner walked into not just Eladio's turf but his freaking house and told him they knew what they needed to do to make his business better. Then they insulted him by calling him a middle man.

The whole scene conveyed why cartels and drug dealers are not just business men. They're animals. Gus was exactly right - the meth business was a better investment than the "transport cocaine from Colombia" business. But because Eladio had to flex nuts, Gus's friend died.

Thought this was the case, but wasn't positive.

Gus's loverboy

I kind of guessed that they may have been gay as well ... which leads me to another point.

Why did't Gus just tell the DEA that he was Gail's lover and that's why his finger prints were in the room. He could have then said he didn't contact the police about the murder because he was embarrassed. Just my two cents.

Because it was easier to distance himself from Gale by just saying he was a junkie trying to hit him up for money.

What Biggio said. Get as much distance between a meth dealer and yourself as possible.

He knows that Gus is connected to... Zee Germans. He killed Gus's boy because they were infringing on the Cartel's game.
