That's not a "coming of age" story at all. I really liked it, but the two main characters were clearly on their own at this point in their lives.

YES! Vision Quest is so fricking epic. I can't tell you the number of boners Linda Fiorentino gave me as a youngster. Great call.

Great call on Vision Quest, every straight guy I know would have sniffed her panties too

Would Good Will Hunting count in this genre?

Absolutely. And it's one of my favorites.

Also have to include:

Igby Goes Down
The Man Without a Face
School Ties
Dead Poets Society

There are really a ton of movies that are coming of age stories. Bildungsroman stories permeate the worlds of fiction and non-fiction, both on film and on paper. Harry Potter, Catcher in the Rye, The Outsiders, etc. are all bildungsroman. And many movies are as well, from ET to Saved!, they run the gamut.

Submarine is one of my favorites of all time (not limited to this genre) It is by no means a perfect coming-of-age movie, but it's extremely charming and witty. Also on netflix.

I have no idea why, but for some reason every time I see that movie is on Netflix, I'm immediately reminded of Harold and Maude.
