So a prominent message board atheist whose avatar is a dog with human hands doesn't send me a marriage proposal.

Thanks for the link. OK, after watching it, seriously, I think this entire thread is overblown. His question was innocuous, she was pleasant, he didn't push it, it was all casual and good natured. No big deal.

Yeah, god killed a bunch of people and destroyed a town so he could prove a point to an atheist. He works in mysterious ways!

That's not what I meant but don't let that keep you from being ridiculous..

Don't get your hopes up. Catholictigerfan, Revelator, and CajunAngele are about the only others I can think of

Perhaps the Lord is attempting to get this lady's attention?

Not that I'm a big fan of Wolf, but I think the lady could have been a little more discreet.

Umm, why? If I was an atheist, my house is destroyed, all my belongings are gone, and some of my friends are dead, why would I say that I'm praising god? That's pretty much the nicest most discrete way of putting it. I'd say its kind of an insulting question to be honest.

The real story is her laughter ...

Yeah real rational thinking there. The Lord Almighty kills 24 innocents so my child and I won't go to hell. Some people kind of find the line of thinking insulting, when natural disasters happen and they're spared. What made them so much more special than the other 24 people killed, not to mention the others just waiting to be found?

An incredibly relative term on this board, especially compared to the actually sane people here.

The point I think we should take from any disaster is that you and I are not really in control of our lives ...

So that leaves the question of, "then who or what is in control?"

Of course that's not what you meant, but that's basically what you said. You just need to think it through a bit more and approach it from someone who doesn't have your point of view on life.

Take a funeral, particularly an untimely or unexpected one. There's always those women (usually older) who go up to the family and say "Jesus was ready for him to come home" or "it was all part of God's plan". Really? Was it really part of god's plan for him to get mowed down by a drunk driver when he was merely 16?

And that's not a story I made up by the way. One of my best friends growing up was killed by a drunk driver (and the guy got away with it), and I'll never forget some old ladies coming up to us telling us those two things. I was simply incredibly insulted by that, and if I thought they had any malice behind those words, were younger, and male, I would have punched them right in the face.

But typically, these people have no malice behind these words. They think they are comforting, but are too stupid to understand that anyone who doesn't have their complete line of thought is going to find this incredibly offensive and insulting.

Sure you and your "sane" cohort may not have meant this towards the atheist mother and her son, but you unknowingly implied it with pretty every other major victim of this tragedy. Why was she spared over the others? Was she just that special and God wanted to make sure he came to her side. He was apparently willing to kill 24 less deserving people within her own neighborhood to teach her to be grateful to god. You may not think you're saying that, but it's heavily unknowingly implied by you both.

You have yet to read my post fully, but your implied meaning (even if you don't think it is) is that God put this tornado down as a reminder on who is in charge. Basically nothing better than a mob boss whenever one of his clients he's providing "protection" for is behind on his payments, and just shoots up his shop and kills a few people for it.

Well, apparently a malevolent or callous god who just destroys people's whole lives.

I can't believe how you don't get why someone would answer with the truth in her case.

I swear to god every time a member of any OTer's family or friend dies tragically, that at least one person says a variant of one of those two things I posted up there. To me, its no better than saying I fricked your mother to my face. If someone actually knew what they were saying with those phrases and meant them, they'd be in for serious asskicking territory.

re: Oh man is anybody watching CNN? Atheist from LA

What I meant was....

God can and does use a variety situations to draw people to him

it's fine if you don't believe that, I don't think the discussion should be about "Did God send this storm?" type of conversation...that's fruitless

Wolf Blitzer asking that specific question he would not ever ask on live TV, is odd don't you think? But since we now know she is an atheist, maybe it's not so odd it happened..that's my only point in suggesting " Maybe God is trying to get her attention?"
