Yea...a club in some place like Miami or Orlando or St. Louis would have been so much better than a club playing in New York City.
Of those three, Miami maybe would have been a market good enough for what MLS is trying to do here.
They want a bigger market to help drive up TV ratings and a place where three more international superstars can come on board through the DP rule.
Miami could have been that spot, but that city's support of teams that aren't world champions is kinda lacking, wouldn't you say? They've already tried and failed with the Fusion...but I think South Florida should get another try with the new MLS structure.
As for Orlando, I think their time will come soon. I think we're looking at MLS getting to 24 teams within the next decade, so a team with as much support and vision as Orlando City might sneak in there. (Problem right now is the legislature in Florida and the stadium financing.)
St. Louis is an incredible soccer city, tons of history. It's begging for a team to be not as mismanaged as AC St. Louis was in the NASL. Natural rivals with SKC, it would be perfect.
However, in order to get this next round of expansion going, I think Garber and the rest of the big shots at MLS wanted a big money team. NYCFC could easily put in the $100M expansion fee (that will go to the rest of the league), and the potential for more superstars and TV ratings and media coverage were all too great. This move could get the ball rolling for the next wave of new teams.
We could be looking at Chivas moving to Orlando or St. Louis or any other expansion bid city as well. Really don't think that team is going to survive in LA the way it's being run now.
------------------
The way I see it...
20. NYCFC
21. Orlando City (or Miami, rumors are that Becks wants in on a franchise there)
22. Atlanta (or Nashville, but Atlanta has put together a solid bid, as much as people on this site don't want to hear that...any team in the Southeast outside of Florida will do)
23 and 24. Take your picks: Minneapolis, San Antonio, St. Louis, Phoenix, any other place that is still rumored to be in the running.

Now the red Bulls can change their name to new Jersey. Just curious where they will play till they get a new stadium. Randalls island?

Lame, I wish they would have went to a new market.

Benson and Landrieu better call the MLS and tell them we want a team in NOLA.

Hating the team is stil good for the MLS though. Hating means you actually care and its better than having 19 teams that you could care less about and 1 team that you like

I know now if Nashville/Memphis could only have a team this would be great.
I'd watch to see that abomination NYFC lose and Nash/Mem win
Until then I'll just be a fair weather Dynamo fan.

Well, I don't think he is going to be involved but...
the majority owner is a sheik, prince, and has a family net work of around $150 billion.

It is funny that City own a team whose rival doesn't play in the city their name suggests.

I do hate the Yankees, so this is definitely a love/hate thing for even me.

What grudge? The Cosmos ownership has been a pain in negotiations with MLS. There's a reason the Cosmos are a bunch of unsigned Indy league guys who play at tiny college fields.
Are Pele and Cantona still involved with the new Cosmos?

Places like Memphis and New Orleans are not getting MLS clubs people. Its not even a pipe dream.
WarSlamEagle pretty much nailed it all in his above post.
Look for another club in Cali, specifically San Diego (could be relocated Chivas), another club in the Midwest (Minneapolis, St. Louis, Detroit, Indy), a couple in Florida (Orlando, Miami, Tampa), and one in the South (Atlanta, Nashville, Raleigh/Durham).
In the far off future, we may see clubs in places like San Antonio, Austin, Phoenix.

Speaking of what's next...

quote:
"There's activity in Miami, there's activity in Orlando, Atlanta and a handful of other places," continued Garber. "But right now we're very focused on getting NYCFC up and launched and in the time to come we'll figure out what comes next for us."

Arthur Blank is serious about getting a MLS team in Atlanta. He's mentioned it in everything related to the new Falcons stadium. Other Falcons execs and city officials have talked about the need for a team in Atlanta. It's a gigantic TV market (heck, Birmingham's market had the highest ratings for the last round of USMNT matches) and has one of the fastest-growing Hispanic markets. When soccer friendlies come to the area, there's a good amount of support.
With this new stadium, you could tarp off the upper deck like Seattle and Vancouver and be successful...probably not to the same extent, but similar.
Here are Seattle's attendance numbers before the Sounders:
Seattle boomed after that with a MLS team. Atlanta, despite being a mediocre NASL team, has the second-best attendance in the league. Now, I'm not saying Atlanta would have those kind of numbers with MLS by any means...but having a top-flight team has a huge effect.
After Orlando, Atlanta is the next big contender in expansion. This Beckham and Miami business could leap them in front, but those are relatively new rumors.
I could see one of the Florida teams and Atlanta making it to 22 by 2020 (Garber's plan from a couple years ago)...and the other one gets Chivas (I'm not sold on San Diego being a spot just yet.)
