My wife is due in June for our first child (a boy), and I was wondering what the dads out there did to make sure their kids were exposed to the best movies at the right times.

My wife's upbringing sucked compared to mine. I've been painstakingly trying to get her to watch quality movies. Such as last night, I turned on Once Upon a Time in the West and tried telling her to watch it but she griped about it for ten minutes then fell asleep. She also fell asleep during The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

So I'm definitely wanting to do this right. My parents just had a box of VHS tapes that I would rummage through whenever I wanted. I'd like to do that, but Blu-Ray is expensive and I doubt my son will be able to access Netflix on his own.

This.

I have watched Madagascar 3 like 10 times in the past week. It's pretty damn funny.

Most women won't watch westerns. Especially westerns with little dialog.

For kids you have to keep them interested, especially with black and white movies. I tried to show my 8 year old nephew King Kong but he lost interest because there wasn't any action in the first 30 minutes. I tried Mighty Joe Young and he loved it because you see Joe fighting a lion in the first 10 minutes.

My nephew loves The Marx Brothers movies, he says Horse Feathers is the funniest movie he's seen.

You are wasting your time here. Women just aren't into those types of movies. The best way to find common ground with your SO is through comedies, classics or maybe crime dramas.

I suggest having him watch Wizard of Oz, Star Wars and some other old ones early so they want get this attitude that anything "old" or not animated sucks.

I wasn't really able to start getting my kids to watch decent movies until a few years ago. Now both of them are glad I did because they are much more well rounded than their classmates and get all kinds of references and sayings they otherwise wouldn't.

Introducing them to great films isn't the problem.

Shielding them from average films made from great books are.

Make him watch Fast Times At Ridgmont High at about 13. That movie actually taught me lessons.

my daughter loved the Wizard of OZ, she watched it everyday for an entire summer. Star Wars was another good one, she started calling fire hydrants, firebots. And would get mad when they wouldn't make R2D2 sounds.

Mowgli is only one and we're not worrying about that right now. However, she does get exposed to my music because I don't play her children's music, just what I'm listening to. I think she'll eventually watch my movies not because I force her to, but because I'm watching them and she'll get exposed to them through my own viewing habits.

2 year old at home. iPad. Done.

He can pick the Netflix app, pick "Kids Netflix" and hten choose a move. He chose the Aristocats last night.

Don't underestimate what these kids can do, also note that iPads are the easiest thing in the world to work.

My son went nuts over the T-Rex scene in Jurrasic Park earlier yesterday.

My daughter is 9 but when she was about 7 we watched Casablanca and loved it. She loved The Wizard of Oz from an early age and has The Star Wars series multiple times. Right now she is into the superhero movies and we saw The Dark Knight Returns at midnight and Iron Man 3 opening weekend.

My daugther and I have watched some older films like the Wizard of Oz, E.T., and Snow White. She loved them all. We have even watched other Disney classics and some of Studio Ghibli's films, including My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away. Check out this list:

My son is 14 and very grounded so I don't have an issue with letting him watch any movie I've seen. He's a big Tarrantino fan especially Reservoir Dogs. His favorite right now is Stand By Me which makes sense considering his age. Movies he's watched recently Sand Lot, tombstone, usual suspects, Seven, Argo, and Schindler's List ( he's a WW 2 buff).

My father introduced me to Sci-fi. Star Wars, Star Trek, the original Superman. As I've gotten older, hes introduced me to other movies I'd of never watched otherwise, like MASH, Heaven Can Wait, Paper Lion, The Great Escape, the original Longest Yard, Night Shift.

My Grandfather loved westerns. I watched Shane, Once Upon a Time in the West, TGTBATU all with him for the first time. He loved old western serials and had tapes and tapes of them when he passed away.

I will definitely introduce my kids to the great 80's films I grew up with, (Breakfast Club, Bueller, Weird Science, Real Genius, Sixteen Candles, etc.) I'm a big Scifi nut, so gotta throw Tron and The Last Starfighter in there.
