Is Once Upon a Time in the West the Best Western?

I caught this movie late last night on some HD Movies channel that was a free preview with DirecTV.
While The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly may be a better movie overall, I feel like Once Upon a Time really captures the essence of the West.
If I had to describe TGTBTU, I'd say it's a Civil War treasure hunt set in the West.
Thoughts?

I like TGTBTU slightly better, but they are both in my top 5 flicks of all time. It's splitting hairs between them as both are awesome westerns. I think I would agree with you that:

The Searchers
The Big Country
John Ford's Cavalry Trilogy
Red River
Stage Coach
I consider Spaghetti Westerns to be a separate genre.

I prefer Sam Peckinpah's style, but I acknowledge that your list includes some of the best.
Still, if I'm going to sit down and watch a western, it's probably going to be Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid or the Wild Bunch.
PG&B has so much going on -- especially for the time. The amount of complex and poignant story lines Peckinpah managed to incorporate seamlessly in his movies is truly remarkable given the genre.

Opinions vary.

Should always be in a top 5 list. Frank is one of the great villains of the western genre.

Definitely one of the best, although Unforgiven is my personal favorite.
