It's HBO. They feel like they are obligated to show edgy shite like that just because they can.

Breast feeding was in book

The gratuitous gay sex was not in the book. It was alluded to subtly.

TBH, I really didn't catch on to it until Jaime made a comment to Loras.

Then I remembered another comment from Stannis to Renly.

It wasn't really centered on the breast-feeding tho, it was just the writer's way of providing character detail

It's 2013 - have you not be de-sensitized to gay scenes in tv/film yet?

And Showtime tries to top it. No wieners yet (that I've noticed) in The Borgias but, oh, they edgy.

I can only think of one gay act that was from a POV in the book.

Even though they happened in the books? Whether implied or not?

I like how people act like it was a panoramic view of them pounding each other in the butt.

There have been much more vulgar things shown on HBO.

Yep, and one departure from the books I could have done without. As already mentioned, just because you can do something doesn't mean it enhances the show.

No one gives a frick about the violence in the show. But show a kid breast feeding or a guy's facial reaction to receiving a blow job off-frame from another guy and it's HBO trying too hard to be edgy. Lawlz, America.

Did you feel the same way about the Melisandre/Gendry scene last night? Or, did your heart rate rise and think to yourself "I would frick Melisandre"?

To be honest, I thought that Martin went over the top in the books with how he described the sex scenes. I thought it detracted some from the overall work. At times some things are better implied. This includes violence.
